Hashim Kamau Leads Kenya Amputee Football into a Promising New Era

In a move that is likely to significantly alter the dynamics of Kenya’s Amputee Football Federation, Hashim Kamau, formerly the federation’s technical director, has been elected the new president. His appointment, which took place on Thursday, followed the disbandment of the federation’s previous board and the ousting of long-serving president Steven Muli. Kamau’s election has stirred conversation within the amputee football governing body, particularly among those who supported the previous leadership.

The federation’s organizing secretary, Edwin Mulwa, was vocal in his criticism of the outgoing board, accusing them of violating the country’s Sports Act. The Act stipulates that sports officials can only serve for a maximum of two terms in elective positions. Mulwa pointed out that certain members of the previous administration had remained in office since 2011, far surpassing the allowed duration.

“We hope that from today, this federation will be led with transparency and integrity. We understand that the former officials might resist these changes, but we are confident that the law is on our side. The Sports Cabinet Secretary has already issued warnings to those who have overstayed their terms in sports federations, urging them to step aside and make room for new leadership,” Mulwa remarked after the appointment.

New Leadership with Fresh Vision

In addition to Kamau’s presidency, John Mokhoha was elected as the new vice president, and Brian Ochieng took over the role of treasurer. Ochieng, in particular, has already outlined the new board’s primary goals, chief among them the creation of Kenya’s first-ever Amputee Football League. Despite the popularity of amputee football globally, Kenya has yet to establish an official league, something that Ochieng is eager to change.

“We currently do not have an organized football league for amputees in Kenya, and this is a gap we are determined to fill as soon as possible. Beyond that, we also face challenges such as a lack of proper training facilities. Our immediate goal is to address these issues and, at the same time, appeal to stakeholders and potential sponsors to come on board and support the team in any way they can,” Ochieng explained.

The national amputee team, which has made significant strides in recent years, continues to face challenges, particularly concerning inadequate resources. The team’s head coach, Willis Odhiambo, expressed optimism about the leadership changes and emphasized the importance of the new board addressing the team’s needs, especially as they prepare for their debut appearance at the Amputee Football World Cup.

World Cup Preparation and Challenges

Kenya is set to participate in the Amputee Football World Cup for the first time, a significant milestone for the nation. The tournament is scheduled to take place in Barranquilla, Colombia, from November 4 to 10. However, Odhiambo has voiced concerns over the lack of preparations ahead of the global competition.

“This will be the first time we’re playing at the World Cup, and yet, as of now, we have no clear direction on when we’ll begin our preparations. It’s frustrating because we carry the national flag, but when we arrive at the competition, we often underperform due to a lack of preparation. For this tournament, we need to be ready, and that includes ensuring an open and transparent selection process so that we can field the best possible team,” said Odhiambo.

The coach also urged the new board to prioritize the women’s amputee team, which faces its own set of challenges. He stressed the need for the federation to provide equal support to the women’s team as they too represent the nation at international competitions.
