Why the 2024 Safari Sevens is Moving to Machakos: A Comprehensive Explanation

For the first time in its 28-year history, the prestigious Safari Sevens rugby tournament will not be held in Nairobi. Instead, the 2024 edition will take place at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos from October 11 to 13, marking a significant milestone for both the tournament and the Kenya Rugby Union (KRU). The decision to move the event from its traditional Nairobi venue is a strategic one aimed at promoting Kenya as a premier sporting destination.

Why Machakos? The KRU’s Vision to Expand Kenya’s Sporting Appeal

The Kenya Rugby Union has been at the forefront of growing the sport locally and internationally. By moving the Safari Sevens outside of Nairobi for the first time in nearly three decades, the KRU is embracing a broader vision to market Kenya as a vibrant sporting hub, reaching beyond the capital city.

KRU commercial director Harriet Okach explained that the decision to host the tournament in Machakos reflects a commitment to showcase Kenya’s diverse regions and offer rugby fans an exciting new experience. “We want to let the world know that Kenya’s sporting potential extends beyond Nairobi. Moving the Safari Sevens to Machakos is part of our strategy to highlight other parts of the country as destinations for international sports events,” Okach said.

One of the key factors in choosing Machakos is the town’s modern infrastructure and proximity to Nairobi. The availability of quality accommodation and other essential services make it an ideal venue for such a high-profile international tournament. “Machakos is not only close to the capital, but it also offers excellent accommodation and logistics for both fans and players, ensuring a seamless experience,” Okach added.

What This Means for Fans and Players

The shift to Machakos presents an opportunity for fans to enjoy the Safari Sevens in a fresh environment, away from the familiar RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi. This new location will bring fans closer to their favorite local and international rugby stars while also introducing Machakos as a welcoming and vibrant town.

This year’s edition is set to offer a unique experience with fans being able to explore Machakos’ culture, hospitality, and natural attractions. The move also aligns with the KRU’s long-term goal of growing the sport by making it more accessible to rugby lovers across the country.

Players, too, stand to benefit from the relocation. The Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos provides a world-class pitch and facilities, ensuring that athletes perform at their highest levels. The tournament will serve as a platform for both established and emerging players to showcase their skills in front of an enthusiastic crowd.

16 Teams Confirmed for the 2024 Safari Sevens

This year’s tournament will feature 16 teams — eight in the men’s category and eight in the women’s category — battling it out over three days. The men’s teams include Kenya’s Shujaa and Morans, Uganda Cranes, Zimbabwe, Qatar, Shogun Rugby (formerly Samurai Rugby), Tropics 7s, and Mayotte. In the women’s category, the Kenya Lionesses and Kenya Cubs will take on Uganda Lady Cranes, Zimbabwe, Tunisia, Tropics 7s, Spanish Barbarians, and Shogun.

The Kenyan teams, led by the defending champions Shujaa, will be eager to put on a show for the home fans. Last year, the Kenya Sevens team secured a commanding 19-0 victory over Samurai Sevens in the final, retaining their title in an unforgettable showdown at Nairobi’s RFUEA Grounds.

With this year’s tournament moving to Machakos, expectations are high for another thrilling competition. Kenyan head coach Kevin Wambua will once again lead Shujaa, hoping to guide his team to a historic back-to-back championship win.
