The much-anticipated Mashemeji Derby between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia, scheduled for this Sunday, faces a major setback as Sports Kenya has declared the Nyayo National Stadium unavailable for the fixture. Sports Kenya Director General Pius Metto confirmed the unavailability of the facility but declined to provide specific reasons during a brief phone interview. He stated, “Nyayo is not ready. When Leopards make a formal request, I will explain to them why the facility is not available.”
Further investigations revealed that the stadium is currently undergoing renovation. A Sports Kenya official disclosed that the facility is being revamped to prepare for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), where Nyayo is expected to relieve the burden on Kasarani Stadium, the main host venue for the tournament.
“Nyayo is an active construction site. There are ongoing upgrades to make the stadium suitable for hosting CHAN matches. At this stage, it is unfit for football fixtures,” the official added.

While the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos emerges as a potential option, reports suggest that the Leopards’ management is hesitant to use it for the derby.
