Nyayo Not Ready: Where Will AFC Leopards Host Gor Mahia for the Mashemeji Derby?
The much-anticipated Mashemeji Derby between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia, scheduled for this Sunday, faces a major setback as Sports Kenya has declared the Nyayo National Stadium unavailable for the fixture. This announcement has thrown the country’s biggest football club match into uncertainty, with fans and stakeholders left wondering about the venue or whether the match will be postponed to a later date.
Nyayo Stadium Declared Off-Limits
Sports Kenya Director General Pius Metto confirmed the unavailability of the facility but declined to provide specific reasons during a brief phone interview. He stated, “Nyayo is not ready. When Leopards make a formal request, I will explain to them why the facility is not available.”
Further investigations revealed that the stadium is currently undergoing renovation. A Sports Kenya official disclosed that the facility is being revamped to prepare for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), where Nyayo is expected to relieve the burden on Kasarani Stadium, the main host venue for the tournament.
“Nyayo is an active construction site. There are ongoing upgrades to make the stadium suitable for hosting CHAN matches. At this stage, it is unfit for football fixtures,” the official added.
AFC Leopards Left Searching for Options
The unavailability of Nyayo Stadium leaves AFC Leopards scrambling to find an alternative venue. While the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos emerges as a potential option, reports suggest that the Leopards’ management is hesitant to use it for the derby. The reluctance stems from concerns about the facility’s suitability for hosting a high-risk match like the Mashemeji Derby.
AFC Leopards have yet to secure Nyayo National Stadium for Sunday’s Mashemeji Derby.
Negotiations are still in progress between the club, Sports Kenya, and the contractor.

Efforts to reach AFC Leopards chairman Dan Shikanda and club secretary general Gilbert Andugu for comments on the matter proved futile, as both officials remained unreachable. Meanwhile, fans are left speculating about the club’s next move, with many expressing frustration over the lack of clear communication from the authorities.
CHAN Preparations Disrupt Local Football
The ongoing renovations at both Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums highlight the Kenyan government’s commitment to delivering quality venues for the 2025 CHAN tournament. The tournament, a significant milestone for Kenyan football, has necessitated the upgrading of various facilities to meet international standards.
In addition to Nyayo and Kasarani, the government has earmarked training venues, including the Kasarani Annex, Lang’ata Sports Complex, and Police Sacco Grounds. These upgrades, while crucial for the long-term development of the sport, have inadvertently disrupted the local football calendar, including the prestigious Mashemeji Derby.
Gor Mahia Captain Urges Fans to Stay Calm
In the wake of uncertainty, Gor Mahia captain Philemon Otieno addressed the club’s supporters, urging them to remain patient and continue showing unwavering support. “The derby is more than just a game. It’s about pride and unity. I urge fans to stay calm as the management works on resolving this issue,” said Otieno in a message shared on social media.

Gor Mahia fans, known for their passionate support, have taken to social media to express mixed reactions. While some have called for transparency and urgency in resolving the venue dilemma, others have expressed disappointment over the lack of preparedness for such a high-profile fixture.
A History of Venue Challenges
This is not the first time the Mashemeji Derby has faced logistical challenges. Over the years, the fixture has often been marred by last-minute venue changes, inadequate facilities, and disputes between clubs and organizers. These recurring issues have raised concerns about the state of Kenyan football and the need for better planning and infrastructure.
What Lies Ahead?
As it stands, the fate of the Mashemeji Derby hangs in the balance. With Nyayo Stadium out of the picture, stakeholders are left scrambling for solutions. The urgency to finalize a venue or announce a new date cannot be overstated, as fans and players alike eagerly await clarity on the situation.
While Machakos’ Kenyatta Stadium remains a potential alternative, its approval for hosting such a high-risk match is yet to be confirmed. Additionally, questions linger about whether the match will proceed as scheduled or face postponement.
The uncertainty surrounding the Mashemeji Derby highlights the broader challenges facing Kenyan football. With the CHAN tournament preparations taking precedence, local fixtures like the derby are bearing the brunt of the disruptions. Fans can only hope that a resolution is reached soon, ensuring that the spirit of Kenya’s biggest football rivalry remains unbroken.
