Kenyan football has turned a new page following the conclusion of the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) elections, where Hussein Mohammed and MacDonald Mariga’s coalition emerged victorious, securing key leadership positions across the federation. The election results mark the beginning of a fresh chapter for FKF as the newly elected team gears up to shape the future of Kenyan football over the next four years.

With 90 delegates casting their votes, representing FKF County branches, FKF Premier League clubs, the National Super League (NSL), the Kenya Women Premier League (KWPL), and the Kenya Footballers Welfare Association (KeFWA), the polls showcased robust competition and underscored the importance of strong leadership in the sport.

Hussein Mohammed Clinches FKF Presidency

Hussein Mohammed was officially elected as FKF president, securing 67 votes in the re-run election. His closest competitors, Barry Otieno and Doris Petra, garnered just one vote each. This resounding victory underscores the confidence delegates have in Mohammed’s vision for Kenyan football. Mohammed’s coalition with former footballer MacDonald Mariga promises a transformative agenda for the sport, focusing on development at grassroots levels and enhanced governance.

In the first round of voting, Mohammed led with 42 votes, followed by Petra with 31 votes and Barry Otieno with 10. However, the re-run election solidified Mohammed’s mandate as the new FKF president.

Key Regional Winners in FKF NEC Elections

The FKF National Executive Committee (NEC) seats were hotly contested across various regions. Notable winners include Dan Shikanda, Chairman of AFC Leopards, and Robert Macharia, Chairman of Murang’a Seal, both of whom are expected to bring valuable insights and experience to the table.

Coast Region

  • Winner: Gabriel Mghendi (32 votes)
  • Gabriel Mghendi emerged victorious, surpassing Edward Oduor (29 votes), Erickson Kyongo (22 votes), and Athman Mwamiri (7 votes).

Central Region

  • Winner: Robert Macharia (54 votes)
  • Robert Macharia claimed the seat, defeating Gordon Davies Chege (35 votes), with one vote declared invalid.

Eastern Region

  • Winner: Charles Njagi (40 votes)
  • Charles Njagi triumphed over Joseph Mutwiri (29 votes) and Elzaphan Mbogo (21 votes).

Lower Rift Valley

  • Winner: Peter Kamau Chege (46 votes)
  • Peter Kamau narrowly edged out David Kipkorir Bunei (42 votes) in one of the tightest races.

North Eastern Region

  • Winner: Ahmedqdar Mohammed Dabar (63 votes)
  • Ahmedqdar Mohammed Dabar dominated the race, leaving Abdulah Salat trailing with zero votes.

Nairobi Region

  • Winner: Dan Shikanda (25 votes)
  • Dan Shikanda narrowly clinched victory over Michael Ouma Majua (23 votes) and Isaac Macharia Wambui (22 votes).

Nyanza Region

  • Winner: Collins Opiyo Kalee (24 votes)
  • Collins Kalee secured the seat, with George Oria Ong’udi (20 votes) and Stephen Ochiel Otieno (18 votes) closely following.

Western Region

  • Winner: Caleb Amwayi Sikobe (43 votes)
  • Caleb Amwayi defeated Nicholas Yakhama (26 votes) and Kevin Mwangu Elegwa (21 votes).

Upper Rift Region

  • Winner: Benard Korir Lagat (48 votes)
  • Benard Korir emerged victorious against Evans Kipchumba Rono (35 votes) and Solomon Kipyego Tanui (4 votes).

Women’s Representative: A New Dawn

The Women’s Representative seat witnessed a significant change as Violet Kerubo Momanyi dethroned Margaret Anyango Onyango, securing 46 votes. Anyango, who has held the position for several years, received just 17 votes, while Maqulate Atieno Onyango garnered 14 votes. Charity Wangoma and Maureen Ochieng also contested but received 9 and 4 votes, respectively.

Kerubo’s win symbolizes a renewed focus on enhancing women’s football in Kenya, an area often overlooked in the past.
