“I Want Justice, Not Relegation,” Mourinho Responds to Manchester City’s 115 Charges

Jose Mourinho has reignited his war of words with Pep Guardiola as Manchester City awaits the verdict from their ongoing Premier League investigation into 115 financial breaches. The Fenerbahce manager, who has frequently been outspoken on the issue, called for “justice” while dismissing claims he wants to see City relegated. The case, which has dominated headlines, could have major implications for the reigning champions and the broader footballing landscape.

Mourinho and Guardiola’s Public Exchange

The rivalry between Mourinho and Guardiola, one of football’s most storied managerial clashes, resurfaced after Guardiola compared himself to Mourinho following City’s defeat to Liverpool. Guardiola referenced Mourinho’s famous gesture of holding up three fingers while at Manchester United, symbolizing the league titles he had won amid criticism. In turn, Guardiola, pointing to his six Premier League trophies, responded, “Maybe we are similar, but he won three, and I won six.”

Mourinho fired back with a sharp retort, emphasizing his desire for clean victories. “I want to win, but I want to win cleanly and fairly. If I can’t win cleanly, I’d rather lose. He won six trophies, and I won three, but I won fairly and cleanly. I don’t want to win by dealing with 115 cases.”

Mourinho’s Call for Justice

Speaking to Turkish outlet Fanatik, Mourinho clarified his stance on Manchester City’s legal issues, reiterating that his primary concern is for justice to prevail. He rejected claims that he harbors ill feelings toward Guardiola or wishes to see City relegated.

“It is not true that I want them to be relegated. What is true is that I want justice. Small teams can sometimes be penalized by FFP [Financial Fair Play] when they exceed their limits by 5-10 euros. I also suffered due to the limits when I was at Roma. I don’t think this is fair.”

Mourinho emphasized the mutual respect between himself and Guardiola, despite their fiery exchanges on and off the touchline over the years. “Pep and I worked together for three years. We know we love each other. Words are one thing; feelings are another.”

The Context of Manchester City’s Charges

Manchester City’s 115 charges stem from alleged breaches of Premier League financial regulations, including failing to provide accurate financial information, overstating sponsorship revenues, and obstructing investigations. If found guilty, the potential penalties for City range from hefty fines and transfer bans to points deductions and, in the most severe scenario, relegation.

The Premier League case against City concluded earlier this month, with the outcome expected to be announced in January. However, any appeals are likely to extend the final decision until after the current season.

Mourinho’s 2018 Premier League Campaign Revisited

Mourinho also jokingly referenced Manchester City’s controversial dominance during the 2017/18 Premier League season, where his Manchester United side finished as runners-up. In October, he humorously suggested that a points deduction for City could retroactively award United the title.

“As you know, we won the Europa League, and we finished second in the Premier League. I think we still have a chance to win that league because if they punish Man City with points, maybe we win that league. Then they have to pay me the bonus and give me the medal!”

This tongue-in-cheek comment highlights Mourinho’s long-standing frustration with City’s financial practices, which have drawn scrutiny since their rise to prominence under the ownership of Sheikh Mansour.

Guardiola Defends Manchester City

Pep Guardiola, a staunch defender of Manchester City’s operations, dismissed Mourinho’s critiques, labeling him “another one on the huge list” of individuals hoping for City’s downfall. Guardiola has consistently maintained that his club operates within the rules and has expressed confidence that the charges will ultimately be proven baseless.

Guardiola has led Man City to six Premier League titles, including claiming four in a row

Guardiola also highlighted his frustration with the media and rival managers who have questioned City’s achievements. “Everybody is innocent until proven guilty,” Guardiola remarked earlier in the season. “We have been here before. I know what people are looking forward to, but let the process happen.”

Broader Implications for Football

The Manchester City case has reignited debates surrounding Financial Fair Play and its enforcement in football. Mourinho’s comments reflect the sentiments of many smaller clubs and managers who believe the system disproportionately penalizes less wealthy teams while allowing bigger clubs to exploit loopholes.

Mourinho’s experiences at Roma, where financial constraints limited the club’s ambitions, underscore the challenges faced by teams striving to compete with financially dominant clubs like Manchester City. His call for fairness and justice echoes a growing sentiment that stricter enforcement of financial regulations is necessary to level the playing field in football.

A Rivalry That Continues to Define Football

The public exchange between Mourinho and Guardiola is the latest chapter in a rivalry that has spanned decades, beginning during their time together at Barcelona. While their competitive clashes as managers of Real Madrid and Barcelona elevated El Clasico to unprecedented levels of intensity, their interactions now are shaped by their respective challenges in modern football.

For Mourinho, now managing Fenerbahce, the Manchester City case offers a platform to advocate for greater transparency and accountability in football governance. For Guardiola, it is a chance to defend the legacy of his team’s historic achievements.

The Road Ahead

As Manchester City await the verdict on their charges, Mourinho’s comments have added another layer to the ongoing debate. While the Premier League champions continue their campaign under a cloud of uncertainty, the eventual decision could set a precedent for how financial regulations are enforced in football moving forward. For now, the world watches as two of football’s most iconic managers keep their rivalry alive off the pitch.
