The Milwaukee Bucks emerged victorious in the 2024 NBA Cup final, defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder 97-81 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Tuesday night. With a dominant triple-double performance of 26 points, 19 rebounds, and 10 assists, Giannis Antetokounmpo not only secured the title for his team but also earned the NBA Cup MVP award, adding yet another accolade to his illustrious career.
This triumph marked a turning point for the Bucks, who overcame a rocky start to the season to become one of the league’s most formidable teams. Their disciplined defense, balanced offense, and team-focused mentality set the tone for a flawless run through the tournament.
Giannis Shines in the Spotlight
Antetokounmpo was the heart and soul of Milwaukee’s victory, showcasing his all-around brilliance in the final. His ability to dominate in the paint, facilitate play, and crash the boards demonstrated why he remains one of the NBA’s elite players. After the game, the Bucks’ superstar reflected on the momentous occasion.
“Oh man, what a feeling,” Antetokounmpo said, his NBA Cup MVP trophy by his side. “What a great feeling. I’ll see you guys again, I promise.”
His postgame remarks embodied his joy and focus, as he encouraged his team to celebrate but also stay committed to the work that had brought them this far.
Dominant Defense Secures Victory
Milwaukee’s defensive prowess was the key to their commanding win. The Bucks held the Thunder to a season-low 81 points, including just 31 points in the second half. Oklahoma City struggled against Milwaukee’s smothering defense, which limited their shooting efficiency to 33.7% from the field and a dismal 15.6% from beyond the arc.
“I definitely think we made a statement defensively,” said forward Taurean Prince, whose contributions on the perimeter helped stifle the Thunder’s offense.
Milwaukee’s defense was at its sharpest during the tournament, with Tuesday’s performance standing out as their most dominant. Their effort underscored a commitment to excellence that extended beyond individual talent.
A Journey of Resilience
The NBA Cup victory was the culmination of a remarkable turnaround for the Bucks. After starting the season with a disappointing 2-8 record, Milwaukee regrouped, and since then, they have posted the league’s best record at 12-3 over their past 15 games (excluding tournament play).
“We’ve shown the team we started the season as is not the team that we are now,” said Damian Lillard, who contributed 23 points in the final. “And it was never who we truly were. Just got off to a tough start.”
Damian Lillard’s Impact
Lillard, acquired by Milwaukee in a blockbuster offseason trade, has been instrumental in the team’s resurgence. His scoring ability, leadership, and partnership with Antetokounmpo have made the Bucks a more dynamic team. Lillard’s 23-point performance in the final was a testament to his importance in Milwaukee’s lineup, providing crucial support on offense.
“This win reminds us we can beat anybody,” Lillard said. “We just have to keep building on this.”
Doc Rivers’ Tactical Brilliance
First-year Bucks coach Doc Rivers played a pivotal role in guiding the team to the NBA Cup title. Rivers emphasized defense, team chemistry, and discipline, which helped Milwaukee navigate the challenges of the season. His ability to adapt and motivate the team has been key to their turnaround.
“It’s tough,” Rivers said after the game. “You come out of this and you’re back to the grind. But tonight, we reminded ourselves of what we’re capable of.”
Rivers also praised the team’s defensive effort, describing it as a critical factor in their success. The Bucks’ ability to shut down one of the Western Conference’s top teams reflected the culture of accountability that Rivers has instilled.
Focused Celebration
Despite their dominant performance, the Bucks opted for a subdued postgame celebration. Unlike traditional champagne showers, the team chose a quieter approach, enjoying music and drinks in the locker room. The decision was influenced by Antetokounmpo’s own experience from the Bucks’ 2021 NBA championship celebration, which left him with a full-body cramp after drinking champagne.

“Last time I drank a little bit of champagne, I had like a full-body cramp,” Antetokounmpo said with a laugh. “But this has been a great trip. Everybody has been locked in, on time for the film sessions, so focused on the walk-throughs. At practice, we were able to be so sharp.”
Antetokounmpo also emphasized the importance of enjoying the moment while maintaining focus for the challenges ahead.
The Bucks’ Perfect Tournament Run
Milwaukee’s path to the NBA Cup title was marked by consistency and dominance. The team won all seven games in the tournament, showcasing their ability to adapt and excel in high-pressure situations. Their victory in the final against the Thunder was the culmination of their growth and determination throughout the season.
Looking Ahead
While celebrating their victory, the Bucks remain focused on maintaining their momentum as the regular season continues. With a tough matchup against the Cleveland Cavaliers looming, Antetokounmpo urged his teammates to stay grounded and committed.
“We have just got to stay humble, keep on improving,” Antetokounmpo said. “We have a lot of basketball in front of us. Right now, the emotion is at an all-time high. We have to bring it down, be humble, and go back to the gym and lock in.”
