“The Ball Flies Too Much”: Arteta Blames Carabao Cup Ball for Arsenal’s Missed Chances in Newcastle 2-0 Defeat

  • Newcastle beat Arsenal 2-0 in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final
  • Mikel Arteta highlighted the ball when breaking down the Gunners’ defeat

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has sparked debate after blaming the Carabao Cup match ball for his side’s wastefulness during their 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United in the first leg of the semi-final. Despite dominating possession and recording 23 shots, the Gunners managed only three on target, leaving them with a steep hill to climb ahead of the second leg.

Arteta Points to Ball Differences

In a post-match interview, Arteta highlighted the challenges posed by the Puma ball used in the Carabao Cup, which differs from the Nike ball used in the Premier League.

“We also kicked a lot of balls over the bar, and it’s tricky that these balls fly a lot,” Arteta explained. “It’s very different to the Premier League ball, and you have to adapt to that. The grip is very different as well, so you have to adapt to that.”

While his comments drew skepticism, Arteta’s concerns echo similar sentiments expressed by Pep Guardiola in 2017 when he criticized the Mitre ball used in a Carabao Cup match as “unacceptable.”

Arsenal’s Missed Opportunities

Arsenal’s inability to capitalize on their chances proved costly against an in-form Newcastle side. The Gunners dominated the match statistically but failed to convert their opportunities into goals.

Arsenal missed several chances as they had 23 shots, but just three of these were on target

Key attacking players, including Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka, struggled to find their rhythm, with shots flying off target or being comfortably saved. Despite Newcastle conceding possession for large portions of the match, their defensive solidity and clinical finishing made the difference.

Newcastle’s Electric Performance

Newcastle’s star striker Alexander Isak was pivotal in their victory. The Swedish forward scored the opening goal and played a crucial role in the build-up to the second, which Anthony Gordon converted after a deflected shot.

Isak’s performance marked his 14th goal in 15 games, cementing his reputation as one of the Premier League’s most lethal forwards. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe praised Isak’s impact but revealed the striker was substituted due to concerns over a hamstring issue.

“First half, he was electric,” Howe said. “He scored and just thought his general game was in a really good place. He’s so important, we can’t risk losing him. Hopefully, he’s OK.”

Newcastle’s victory extended their winning streak to seven games as they aim for their first major domestic trophy in nearly seven decades.

Tactical Insights: How Newcastle Overcame Arsenal

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side demonstrated tactical discipline and efficiency in neutralizing Arsenal’s attacking threats. Despite Arsenal’s attempts to control the game through midfield dominance and quick transitions, Newcastle’s compact defensive shape and strategic pressing limited the Gunners to low-quality chances.

Isak’s movement and technical ability allowed Newcastle to capitalize on Arsenal’s defensive lapses, creating decisive moments that sealed the win. Anthony Gordon’s goal, resulting from a deflected shot, further highlighted Newcastle’s clinical approach.

Arsenal’s Struggles in the Final Third

While Arsenal’s midfield trio of Martin Ødegaard, Declan Rice, and Kai Havertz showed glimpses of creativity, their attacking output lacked precision. Gabriel Jesus, tasked with leading the line, was unable to convert the limited service he received into meaningful chances.

Arteta’s side also struggled with composure in the final third, frequently overhitting shots and failing to test Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope. The Gunners’ reliance on wing play through Saka and Gabriel Martinelli became predictable, allowing Newcastle’s defense to adapt effectively.

The Bigger Picture: Arsenal’s Carabao Cup Hopes

Arsenal’s 2-0 deficit leaves them in a precarious position ahead of the second leg at St. James’ Park on February 5. To overturn the result, the Gunners must find solutions to their attacking woes and improve their efficiency in front of goal.

Arteta will also need to address the mental and tactical challenges posed by a hostile atmosphere in Newcastle. The Gunners’ defensive organization will be tested further as Newcastle look to capitalize on home advantage and secure their place in the final.

Newcastle’s Quest for Silverware

Newcastle’s resurgence under Eddie Howe continues to impress, with the Carabao Cup offering a genuine chance for the Magpies to end their long wait for a major domestic trophy.

With a solid defensive foundation and attacking players like Isak and Gordon in top form, Newcastle are well-positioned to finish the job in the second leg. However, managing Isak’s fitness will be crucial as the Magpies aim to maintain their momentum.

 A Semi-Final to Remember

The Carabao Cup semi-final between Arsenal and Newcastle promises more drama in the return leg. With Arteta’s comments on the match ball stirring debate and Newcastle in commanding form, all eyes will be on St. James’ Park as these two sides battle for a place in the final.
