Angela Okutoyi Battles Hard but Falls Short in W35 Tournament Final

Kenya’s rising tennis star Angela Okutoyi showcased her talent and resilience at the ITF W35 Women’s World Tour tournament held at Nairobi Club. Despite her valiant effort, the 2021 Wimbledon Juniors doubles champion succumbed to Joanna Garland from Chinese Taipei in the singles final. Garland secured a 6-1, 6-4 victory to claim the tournament’s top prize of $3,000 (Ksh 387,000), while Okutoyi earned $1,800 (Ksh 232,000) as the runner-up.

A Tough Singles Final

The final proved to be a challenging encounter for Okutoyi, who struggled to find her rhythm in the first set. Garland, displaying remarkable precision and power, capitalized on a series of double faults by the Kenyan. Breaking Okutoyi’s serve early, Garland quickly established a 2-0 lead. Although Okutoyi managed to fight back, reducing the deficit to 3-1, Garland’s dominance continued as she broke serve again to win the first set in just 39 minutes.

In the second set, Okutoyi, buoyed by an enthusiastic home crowd, appeared more composed. She stormed to a 2-1 lead and showcased glimpses of her potential with some powerful baseline shots. However, Garland’s tactical brilliance shone through as she exploited Okutoyi’s weaker right side. The Taiwanese player broke serve in the fourth game to tie the score at 2-2 and eventually edged ahead to seal the set and the match.
