Harambee Stars Seek New Coach: Frank Nuttall Throws His Hat in the Ring

The quest to appoint a new head coach for Kenya’s national football team, Harambee Stars, has taken an intriguing turn as former Gor Mahia tactician Frank Nuttall officially expresses his interest in the role.

Known for his unbeaten league triumph with Gor Mahia, Nuttall’s name sparks both nostalgia and optimism among Kenyan football fans.

With a proven track record of success in Kenyan football, the Scottish coach believes he is the ideal candidate to steer Harambee Stars toward a brighter future.

Frank Nuttall is a name etched in the hearts of Gor Mahia fans. His tenure from 2014 to 2016 saw the club achieve unparalleled success, most notably in 2015, when Gor Mahia completed the Kenyan Premier League season unbeaten. This was a historic feat last achieved in 1976, cementing his place as one of the best coaches in the league’s history.

Under his guidance, Gor Mahia clinched back-to-back league titles in 2014 and 2015. The 2015 season was particularly remarkable as K’Ogalo dominated the league, showcasing disciplined gameplay and tactical prowess.

His achievements extended beyond the league, with Gor Mahia winning the Kenyan Super Cup and the KPL Top 8 Cup in the same year. Nuttall’s stellar performance earned him the coveted Kenya Premier League Coach of the Year award in 2015.

Speaking to Mozzart Sport, Nuttall expressed confidence in his ability to lead Harambee Stars. “I am interested in the Harambee Stars head coach job, and I have informed the FKF of my desire and motivation to lead the team,” he stated.

His coaching philosophy revolves around discipline, hard work, and tactical awareness—principles he believes are crucial for success at the national level. Nuttall also emphasized the importance of youth development, an area he deems vital for the long-term growth of Kenyan football.

Kenya has immense football talent,” he remarked. “With proper nurturing and a clear vision, Harambee Stars can become a force to reckon with in African football.”

The Harambee Stars coaching role became vacant after the resignation of Turkish tactician Engin Firat in late 2024. Firat stepped down after failing to guide Kenya to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. Currently, Francis Kimanzi is serving as the interim coach, overseeing the team’s preparations for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the Mapinduzi Cup.

While several high-profile names have been linked to the role, including former AmaZulu head coach Benni McCarthy, Nuttall’s familiarity with Kenyan football could give him a unique edge. His ability to connect with local players and his understanding of the Kenyan football ecosystem are significant advantages.

Beyond his success at Gor Mahia, Nuttall has an impressive resume that spans multiple African countries. Before his time in Kenya, he coached Ghanaian giants Hearts of Oak, leading them to their first FA Cup final appearance in 17 years. He also secured the Ghana Independence Cup during his tenure.

Nuttall’s career highlights include his role as a fitness coach for Rangers FC during their victorious 2004–2005 season, where the Scottish club clinched the Premier League and League Cup titles. This experience at a top European club adds another layer of credibility to his coaching credentials.

What Nuttall Brings to the Table

  1. Tactical Mastery: Nuttall’s teams are known for their disciplined defense and efficient attacking play, qualities that Harambee Stars need to compete at the highest level.
  2. Youth Development: His commitment to nurturing young talent aligns with Kenya’s goal of building a sustainable football future.
  3. Proven Success: His unbeaten league campaign with Gor Mahia and his accolades in Ghana highlight his ability to deliver results under pressure.
  4. Cultural Familiarity: Nuttall’s understanding of Kenyan football culture positions him as a relatable and effective leader for the Harambee Stars.

Nuttall also praised McDonald Mariga, the FKF Vice President, for his commitment to improving the sport. As a former Kenya international with experience in top European leagues, Mariga’s leadership could play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Kenyan football.

“Mariga has the right mindset and connections to transform the game. I’m optimistic about what we can achieve together,” Nuttall said.

As Kenya’s football fraternity awaits the appointment of a new Harambee Stars head coach, Frank Nuttall’s candidature presents a compelling case. His proven track record, deep understanding of Kenyan football, and commitment to youth development make him a strong contender for the role.

While competition for the position is fierce, Nuttall’s familiarity with the local football landscape and his history of success in Africa could tip the scales in his favor. With Harambee Stars gearing up for crucial tournaments, the appointment of an experienced and visionary coach like Nuttall could be the key to unlocking the team’s potential.

Kenyan football fans will undoubtedly watch closely as the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) makes this critical decision. Could Frank Nuttall be the man to lead Harambee Stars to new heights? Time will tell.
