Manchester United’s Nightmare Season: Can Ruben Amorim Save It with Europa League Glory?

Manchester United Enduring a Nightmare Season Under Ruben Amorim

Manchester United’s turbulent season under new head coach Ruben Amorim has been nothing short of a disaster. The Portuguese tactician took over a team already struggling under Erik ten Hag, and things have only gone from bad to worse. With United languishing in the lower half of the Premier League table, their best chance at redemption lies in the UEFA Europa League.

Amorim himself has acknowledged the dire state of the club, calling it one of the worst Manchester United sides in history. The numbers don’t lie—United have suffered more defeats in their first 25 games than in any Premier League season, and their goal-scoring struggles have left fans frustrated.

But despite their domestic woes, Manchester United still have an opportunity to turn things around. Winning the Europa League would not only salvage their season but also secure a much-needed Champions League spot for next season.

Manchester United’s Dismal Form in the Premier League

Since Amorim’s arrival, Manchester United have failed to show signs of significant improvement. They have only managed four wins in 14 Premier League games under his leadership, leaving them far off the pace in the race for European football.

Their goal-scoring issues are particularly concerning. With a shot conversion rate of just 8.4%, only bottom-placed Southampton have a worse record in front of goal. Star players like Bruno Fernandes have struggled, with just five league goals to his name—nowhere near the numbers of Mohamed Salah, Erling Haaland, or even Chris Wood.

Squad Problems and Poor Transfer Decisions

One of the biggest reasons behind Manchester United’s struggles this season has been their failure to strengthen key areas of the squad. Despite glaring deficiencies in the attacking department, United did not go all out for a proven goalscorer like Harry Kane or Victor Osimhen.

The club’s financial issues have also played a role, with United cutting staff after recording a £300 million loss over the past three years. Their transfer dealings have been questionable, highlighted by the £3 million spent to bring in sporting director Dan Ashworth—only for him to leave five months later with a £4 million payout.

Meanwhile, the squad looks alarmingly thin. Marcus Rashford and Antony, both of whom left the club on loan in January, have found a new lease of life at Aston Villa and Real Betis, respectively. Injuries to key players like Amad Diallo and Kobbie Mainoo have also hampered United’s ability to compete at the highest level.

Europa League: United’s Best Hope for Champions League Football

With the Premier League proving to be a lost cause, Manchester United must shift their focus entirely to the UEFA Europa League. The tournament now represents their only realistic route back into the Champions League next season.

United have been drawn against Real Sociedad in the last 16, a tough opponent that has the potential to cause problems for Amorim’s struggling side. Even if they get past Sociedad, there are other major threats in the competition, including Tottenham Hotspur, who have already beaten United three times this season.

Winning the Europa League is easier said than done, but Manchester United have the talent to go all the way. Players like Fernandes, Casemiro, and Rasmus Højlund need to step up and deliver when it matters most.

Can Amorim Survive the Season?

Ruben Amorim is facing mounting pressure, and unless he can guide United to silverware, his future at Old Trafford looks bleak. With Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS now having a say in the club’s footballing decisions, there is no guarantee that Amorim will remain in charge beyond this season.

United’s upcoming fixtures in both the Premier League and Europa League will be crucial in determining whether Amorim can turn things around or if the club will once again be forced into making a managerial change.

Final Thoughts

Manchester United are experiencing one of their worst seasons in the Premier League era, but the Europa League offers them a lifeline. If Ruben Amorim can lead them to European glory, he could buy himself more time to fix the mess at Old Trafford. However, failure to win the competition could spell the end of his short and turbulent tenure at Manchester United.
