Relegation Battle Heats Up: Mathare United Drops Nine Players in Mid-Season Overhaul

Mathare United has made major squad changes in a dramatic mid-season reshuffle, confirming the exit of nine players as the club battles to remain in the top tier of Kenyan football. With the team sitting 12th on the league table with 27 points—just five points above the relegation zone—these changes could be the key to survival.

A Critical Turning Point for Mathare United

With the mid-season transfer window now closed, Mathare United has taken decisive action to strengthen its squad while offloading several players. The club’s decision to part ways with nine players signals a bold step toward restructuring, with a mix of loan returns, contract terminations, and transfers shaping the team’s future.

Among the key departures are Kevin Kimani and Christopher Koloti, who were on loan from AFC Leopards. Both players have returned to their parent club and are expected to feature in Ingwe’s squad for the remainder of the season.

Also leaving is Christian Lubulu, a player instrumental in Mathare United’s promotion to the top flight. Lubulu, who initially joined from Kibera Black Stars, has been a key figure for the team. Another notable exit is Hakim Msami, a former Mombasa Elite defender who was on loan with Mathare.

The full list of departing players includes:

  • Elias Kibet (former Sofapaka striker)
  • Gideon Ogweno
  • Stephen Okola (former Sofapaka defender)
  • Harryson Luta
  • Jephiter Maraga

Mathare United’s Official Statement

In an official statement, the club confirmed the player exits and outlined their reasoning for the changes:

“The club can confirm the release of five players following the closure of the mid-season transfer window. The five are Elias Kibet, Gideon Ogweno, Stephen Okola, Harryson Lutta, and Jephiter Maraga. These exits bring the total number of departures to nine, which also includes Christian Lubulu, Kevin Kimani, Christopher Koloti, and Hakim Msami.”

The statement further explained that Kibet and Okola, who both played pivotal roles in Mathare United’s promotion campaign, have mutually agreed to terminate their contracts. Meanwhile, Ogweno has been transferred to Kibera Black Stars, and Maraga and Lutta have been loaned out to KSG Ogopa and Soy United, respectively.

A Fresh Start with New Signings

Despite losing a significant number of players, Mathare United has been proactive in the transfer market, bringing in reinforcements to improve squad depth. The club has secured the services of Musa Masika, Donald Ange, Brian Ochieng, Alex Warai, Eugene Mukangula, Ian Omondi, and John Nyawir, among others.

These signings indicate Mathare’s intent to build a squad capable of securing its place in the top flight. The club is banking on this fresh talent to boost performance and pull away from the relegation zone.

The Bigger Picture: Mathare’s Fight for Survival

Mathare United’s struggles this season are evident. Despite sitting outside the relegation zone, the gap is dangerously close. The team’s performance in the coming weeks will determine whether these drastic changes were the right move.

With an infusion of new signings and the removal of underperforming or surplus players, Mathare United is aiming for a stronger second half of the season. The club’s management is confident that these changes will bring the desired results and help steer the team away from the drop.

Can Mathare United Avoid the Drop?

Mathare United’s recent history has been one of ups and downs. From being relegated in the past to making a strong comeback, the club has shown resilience. However, the challenge now is to remain consistent and grind out results in the crucial fixtures ahead.

The success of this mid-season overhaul will be measured by how well the new signings integrate into the squad and contribute to improved performances. If Mathare United can find stability and cohesion, they stand a good chance of securing their top-tier status.
