Manchester United Eyes Europa League Glory as Amorim Seeks Redemption
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has emphasized the importance of winning the UEFA Europa League, stating that while it may not be crucial for the club’s long-term future, it could make a “massive difference” to their disappointing season. The Red Devils are set to face Real Sociedad in a last-16 showdown at the Reale Arena on Thursday, hoping to find some solace amid their struggles in domestic competitions.
A Season to Forget – Can Europa League Change the Narrative?
Manchester United’s campaign has been far from what fans expected. Sitting 14th in the Premier League, their chances of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League via league placement are almost non-existent. Their FA Cup dreams were shattered by Fulham, leaving the Europa League as their only realistic route to European football next season.
Amorim, who took over at Old Trafford in November following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal, acknowledged the significance of Europa League success.
“I think it’s not a crucial thing for the future of the club… (but it would be) a massive difference in our season, especially because we are out of the (other) cups and in a bad position in the league,” Amorim told reporters.
The Portuguese tactician, however, insisted that Manchester United’s long-term vision should take precedence over short-term fixes. While winning the Europa League would secure Champions League qualification and boost morale, he believes the club must focus on restructuring and strengthening for the future.
“We have to think of the club as a project, not just solve things in this moment,” he added.
A Key Opportunity to Attract Top Talent
One of the biggest concerns for United fans is whether the club can still attract elite players without Champions League football. However, Amorim remains optimistic.
“Man United can (aim for) all the best players in the future even without Champions League in the future,” he said. “We have to change a lot of things and we’ll try to do that.”
Despite their current struggles, Manchester United remains one of the biggest clubs in world football. Their history, financial power, and global appeal ensure they will always be in the market for top-tier signings. However, securing European football would certainly make negotiations easier.
Struggles in Front of Goal – Hojlund and Zirkzee Under Pressure
One of United’s biggest problems this season has been their lack of goals. Rasmus Hojlund has gone 18 matches without finding the net, while Joshua Zirkzee has only scored once in his last 16 appearances.
Amorim admitted that his forwards have been unlucky but also pointed to the team’s lack of creativity in earlier matches.
“There are things that are hard to explain,” he said. “Before the last match, we had some games without opportunities, creating chances, that is impossible for them to score, it’s a team thing.”
However, the manager remains confident that his strikers will eventually find their rhythm.
“In the last games… we had opportunities to score and we didn’t score, sometimes really, that’s it.”
Injury Woes Continue for Manchester United
United will be without several key players for their clash against Real Sociedad. Harry Maguire and Manuel Ugarte are ruled out after picking up knocks in the FA Cup defeat to Fulham.

Additionally, Amad Diallo, Kobbie Mainoo, and Luke Shaw remain sidelined, further depleting an already stretched squad. Teenage striker Chido Obi, who has shown promise in domestic fixtures, is also unavailable as he is not registered for the Europa League.
This injury crisis could force Amorim to make tactical adjustments, possibly relying on more experienced players to carry the team through this critical fixture.
Real Sociedad Eyeing an Upset – But Still Fear United’s Strength
Despite United’s inconsistent form, Real Sociedad head coach Imanol Alguacil still considers the English giants as favorites to win the Europa League.
“I don’t agree with those who say they are coming here in a bad moment, they have less wins in the league than they deserve for how they’ve played, they have a great squad and some top players,” Alguacil said.
Real Sociedad will assess the fitness of midfielder Martin Zubimendi, who was forced off during their recent 4-0 defeat to Barcelona. Alguacil hopes to have him available as they prepare for one of their biggest games of the season.

United’s Europa League Pedigree vs. Sociedad’s European Aspirations
Manchester United’s history in European competitions gives them a significant edge over Real Sociedad. The Red Devils won the Europa League in 2017 under Jose Mourinho and have three UEFA Champions League titles to their name.
On the other hand, Real Sociedad have never reached a European final and will be aiming to make history by eliminating one of Europe’s most storied clubs.
Can United Step Up When It Matters Most?
With the Premier League looking like a lost cause, Manchester United must shift their full focus to the Europa League. Winning this competition could salvage their season, provide a pathway to the Champions League, and ease some of the pressure on Amorim.
However, Real Sociedad will not be an easy opponent. United will need to deliver a disciplined performance, take their chances, and tighten up defensively if they are to secure an advantage heading into the second leg at Old Trafford.
As the pressure mounts, Manchester United fans will be hoping their team can rise to the occasion and keep their European dreams alive.
