FKF Signs Landmark MoU with Morocco to Boost Kenya’s Football Growth Ahead of AFCON 2025 and World Cup 2030

The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has taken a significant step in strengthening Kenya’s football development by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Royal Moroccan Football Federation. This partnership, spearheaded by FKF President Hussein Mohammed and his Moroccan counterpart Fouzi Lekjaa, is set to open doors for major opportunities in Kenyan football.

The deal comes at a crucial time when both nations are preparing for major international tournaments. Morocco is set to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, while Kenya is gearing up to host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and AFCON 2027 alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

Key Areas of Collaboration

This agreement is expected to bring various benefits to Kenyan football, focusing on three major areas: infrastructure development, capacity building, and exchange programs.

Morocco’s World-Class Facilities for Kenya’s U-20 Team

One of the immediate benefits of this deal is Morocco’s commitment to providing its top-tier football facilities to Kenya’s U-20 team as they prepare for the upcoming AFCON U-20 tournament. The tournament, set to take place from April 26 to May 18 in Ivory Coast, will see Kenya compete against some of the strongest teams in Africa, including defending champions Senegal, Zambia, and Sierra Leone.

Morocco is widely recognized for having some of the best football infrastructure in Africa, and FKF will be keen to take full advantage of these facilities to help Salim Babu’s squad prepare effectively. This partnership will allow Kenya’s young talents to train in an elite environment, improving their chances of success in the competition.

Coach and Technical Staff Development

Another key aspect of the collaboration is the training and development of coaches and technical staff. Morocco, which has invested heavily in football development, will help Kenya in building a stronger coaching network. This move aims to elevate the quality of football coaching in Kenya by exposing local coaches to world-class training techniques and methodologies.

By providing Kenyan coaches with access to top-tier football academies and experts, FKF hopes to raise the overall standard of football in the country. This initiative is crucial in ensuring that Kenyan players receive top-quality training from grassroots levels to the senior national team.

Football Infrastructure Development

FKF and the Moroccan Football Federation will also work together on infrastructure development. Morocco’s investment in modern stadiums, training facilities, and academies has set a high standard in African football. Through this MoU, Kenya hopes to gain insights into how Morocco has managed to develop its football facilities and apply similar strategies at home.

Morocco’s Mohamed V Football Academy in Rabat, a state-of-the-art facility that has produced some of the country’s top football stars, will serve as a model for Kenya’s football infrastructure development. FKF aims to replicate such initiatives in Kenya, ensuring that young footballers have access to top-class facilities that can nurture their talent.

Kenya and Morocco’s Upcoming Football Commitments

Kenya’s Road to AFCON 2027 and CHAN 2024

Kenya is preparing to co-host AFCON 2027 alongside Uganda and Tanzania, marking a historic moment for East African football. Before that, Kenya will also host CHAN 2024, a tournament designed exclusively for home-based players.

The Harambee Stars will face Morocco in Group A of CHAN 2024, alongside DR Congo, Angola, and Zambia. Playing against Morocco will provide Kenya with a tough but valuable test, as the Atlas Lions are one of Africa’s strongest footballing nations.

Morocco’s AFCON 2025 and World Cup 2030 Ambitions

Morocco will be aiming to win their second AFCON title on home soil in 2025. The Atlas Lions have been drawn in Group A alongside Mali, Zambia, and Comoros. Having reached the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Morocco will be looking to continue their impressive performances on the global stage.

Beyond AFCON, Morocco will also co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, making them the second African country to host the prestigious tournament after South Africa in 2010. This presents a golden opportunity for Kenyan football officials to learn from Morocco’s expertise in hosting major tournaments, as Kenya prepares for AFCON 2027.

FKF’s Vision for the Future

FKF President Hussein Mohammed expressed his excitement about the partnership, emphasizing that it is a major step in reclaiming Kenya’s football glory days.

“The offer of support from the Kingdom of Morocco to our federation is a significant step in the realization of our aspirations in reclaiming our football glory days. I also congratulated the President and his team for the exemplary performance in the Qatar World Cup 2022 and the development of the world-class iconic Mohamed V Football Academy in Rabat,” said Hussein.

Hussein’s visit to Morocco also came days after FKF appointed former South African international Benni McCarthy as the new head coach of Harambee Stars. McCarthy has been given the responsibility of leading Kenya into CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027, and this collaboration with Morocco will provide him with additional resources to strengthen the team.

A Bright Future for Kenyan Football

This agreement between Kenya and Morocco represents a major step forward in FKF’s mission to elevate Kenyan football to international standards. By leveraging Morocco’s experience in hosting tournaments, football infrastructure, and technical expertise, Kenya is positioning itself as a serious footballing nation in Africa.

With the upcoming CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027, as well as Morocco’s AFCON 2025 and World Cup 2030 commitments, both nations have a lot to gain from this collaboration. For Kenya, the partnership could be the turning point that helps the country return to the top levels of African football.
