Kenya Harlequin have ushered in a new era with the appointment of Patrice Agunda as their head coach, less than a week after the departure of former Kenya Sevens boss Paul Murunga. The announcement, made on Monday, signals a fresh start for one of Kenya’s most decorated rugby clubs as they prepare for the 2025 National Sevens Circuit and the 2025/2026 Kenya Cup season.
Agunda’s rise to the helm of Quins is a story rooted in loyalty, experience, and a long-standing connection with the Ngong Road-based side. A former club captain and decorated player, Agunda brings more than 15 years of service to the club both on and off the pitch.
A Familiar Face with Proven Leadership
Patrice Agunda is not new to Quins—or to success. As a player, he was a pillar in the squad for over a decade, five of those years spent leading the team as captain. During his playing career, he lifted three Kenya Cup titles, three Rugby Super Series crowns, the Enterprise Cup, and the National Sevens Circuit trophy. His leadership and consistency earned him a place in the club’s prestigious Roll of Honour in 2014.
Off the pitch, Agunda has served Quins in multiple coaching capacities over the last four years. He’s been instrumental in building the team’s technical skills as a skills coach, provided strategy during sevens competitions, and even took the reins of the Kenya Harlequin women’s team, guiding them to a semi-final finish in their debut season.

International Exposure and Tactical Growth
Agunda’s coaching journey also includes global exposure. In 2024, he participated in an exclusive coaching exchange program with the Japanese national rugby team—an experience that broadened his tactical knowledge and gave him insights into high-performance coaching environments.
This international experience, combined with his deep-rooted understanding of Quins’ culture and structure, positions Agunda as an ideal candidate to take the team forward into a new competitive phase.
Speaking after his appointment, the newly minted head coach couldn’t hide his enthusiasm.
“I’m honoured to take up this role. We have great potential, and I’m ready to build on our legacy,” said Agunda.
His immediate focus will be preparing the squad for the upcoming National Sevens Circuit, where Quins will be defending champions.
Club Backing and High Expectations
Kenya Harlequin Chairman Victor Sudi expressed full confidence in the new coach.
“Kenya Harlequin has always aimed to grow top rugby coaches. We are happy that Patrice is stepping up as head coach. We believe in him and wish him the very best,” Sudi said.
The club’s commitment to nurturing coaching talent from within has been a long-standing philosophy, and Agunda’s promotion is a testament to that.
From Simbas to Shujaa – A Dual International
Agunda’s experience goes beyond club rugby. He has donned the national colours for both Kenya’s 15s team (the Simbas) and the national sevens team (Shujaa). His standout international appearances include the 2013 Rugby Sevens World Cup and the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
He was also part of the victorious squads that lifted the Safari Sevens and the Africa Cup Sevens titles, adding a wealth of top-level exposure to his coaching credentials.
Challenges and Expectations Ahead
With just under two months before the National Sevens Circuit kicks off, Agunda has limited time to fine-tune his squad. However, his familiarity with the team and experience with the Quins setup provides a solid foundation.
His immediate goals will include ensuring a smooth transition from the Murunga era, integrating new talent, and maintaining the team’s high performance in both the Sevens and Kenya Cup campaigns.
As Quins aim to build on their status as defending NSC champions and challenge for top honours in the Kenya Cup, all eyes will be on Agunda to deliver.
His journey from the grassroots to club legend to head coach is an inspiring reminder of what loyalty, talent, and determination can achieve in Kenyan rugby.
