Tusker slip in title race as Talanta’s Osoro hits brace to ignite golden boot dream

Tusker FC’s hopes of clinching the 2024/25 FKF Premier League title were dealt a crushing blow after a 2-0 defeat to FC Talanta on Wednesday at the Dandora Stadium. In a match that carried huge implications at both ends of the table, it was Emmanuel Osoro’s clinical brace that stole the show, lifting Talanta’s survival hopes and putting him firmly in the Golden Boot race.

Tusker Falter When It Matters Most

Heading into Matchweek 31 with momentum and just three points behind leaders Kenya Police, the Brewers were aware that nothing short of a win would keep their title challenge alive. But under the hot Nairobi sun and in front of a spirited Talanta crowd, Tusker never quite hit their stride.

The game turned as early as the 10th minute when defender George Kaddu handled the ball in the box while attempting to block a thunderous shot from Benard Odhiambo. Referee Brooke Philips Elijah pointed to the spot, and Osoro stepped up to calmly slot past Brian Bwire, scoring his 15th of the season.

Though Kaddu was perhaps fortunate to avoid a red card, the damage was already done on the scoreboard. Tusker, rattled and disjointed, immediately turned to their bench, introducing Naaman Balecho and Ian Simiyu to restore some structure.

Talanta’s Midfield Masterclass

FC Talanta, rejuvenated by the early lead, continued to press with intensity and precision. Wingbacks Alex Kipruto and Evans Malwa were relentless down the flanks, combining well and frustrating Tusker’s wide players. Their defensive resilience was matched by a compact midfield that broke up play and transitioned quickly.

While Tusker enjoyed brief spells of possession, they struggled to break Talanta’s shape. The Brewers lacked the creativity to penetrate, and key attackers like Eric Otieno and Jackson Macharia found themselves isolated and frustrated.

Osoro Seals the Deal Late On

As the second half wore on, Tusker’s urgency grew. Jacob Onyango and Thomas Omole were thrown into the fray, and defender Charles Momanyi was pushed forward in a desperate tactical switch by coach Charles Okere.

But their gamble backfired with just minutes left on the clock. A poor back-pass from Collins Odhiambo was intercepted by Osoro, who kept his composure to slot past Bwire and bag his second of the afternoon.

That goal not only secured three vital points for Talanta but also took Osoro’s season tally to 16 goals, putting him in prime position to challenge for the Golden Boot as the season nears its end.

Tusker’s Title Hopes Hang by a Thread

With just three matches remaining, Tusker’s loss leaves them on 55 points, trailing Kenya Police, who also suffered a defeat to Kakamega Homeboyz. Gor Mahia, meanwhile, sit just behind with a game in hand and a chance to leapfrog both teams with victory in the highly anticipated Mashemeji Derby.

Tusker must now win all their remaining fixtures and hope both Police and Gor drop points—a scenario that seems increasingly unlikely given the current form of the top two.

Coach Okere was visibly frustrated after the match. “We lost control early, and never recovered,” he said. “We’ll fight till the end, but we’ve made it hard for ourselves.”

Talanta Take Huge Step Towards Safety

For FC Talanta, this was more than just three points. The win propels them to 35 points and into 12th place, putting breathing room between them and the dreaded drop zone. With three matches to go, Jackline Juma’s side will now believe they can finish the season strong and survive relegation.

They’ll next face Kenya Police, a fixture that could have significant impact on both the title race and relegation battle. Given their performance against Tusker, few would bet against Talanta pulling off another surprise.

A Word on Emmanuel Osoro

What a campaign it’s been for Osoro. With 16 goals this season, the striker has quietly emerged as one of the most lethal forwards in the league. His composure, positioning, and work rate have given Talanta a consistent attacking threat.

More importantly, his goals have come when his side needed them most. If he continues on this path, he could not only secure personal glory in the Golden Boot race but also ensure Talanta retain their top-flight status.
