CHAN 2024: Kenyans divided as McCarthy’s Harambee Stars squad sparks heated debate

The unveiling of Harambee Stars’ provisional squad for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) has triggered a wave of mixed reactions across Kenya, with new head coach Benni McCarthy’s selection drawing both praise and sharp criticism from football fans and analysts.

McCarthy, who was appointed earlier this year, released the 30-man provisional list on Wednesday, 2 July, ahead of the tournament co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania from 2 to 30 August. Kenya will play all their Group A matches at the newly renovated Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Group A features some of the continent’s toughest sides, including DR Congo, Morocco, Angola, and Zambia. The competition marks a historic opportunity for Kenya, who will be looking to make a statement on home soil.

But even before the tournament kicks off, debate is raging online over the players included—and more significantly, those who were left out.

One of the most talked-about omissions is Shabana FC’s talisman Brian Michira. The forward was a standout performer in the just-concluded season, netting 17 goals and providing 8 assists in all competitions. Michira was the top scorer in the Mozzart Bet Cup with five goals and played a pivotal role for Shabana in the FKF Premier League.

Despite his strong form, Michira was not named in the provisional squad. His exclusion caused a social media storm, with fans flooding platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to express their displeasure.

“The coach never attended any Shabana match. That means there are people still assisting in making the shortlist. Michira would easily be on that list,” said Edwin Mmoja Mkenya, a disgruntled supporter.

“I think some people have personal reasons with Shabana. They have overlooked the players for a long time. Let us speak the truth. Austin Odongo and Brian Michira deserve a call-up,” echoed Atuti Tiberius.

In contrast, some fans defended McCarthy’s decisions, urging supporters to be patient and allow the South African tactician to implement his vision.

“You cannot choose everybody. Let the coach work with the players he sees fit,” posted Asima Asigo.

“McCarthy knows why he did not pick some players. He is the coach—let us give him time. Football is not as easy as you guys think,” added Rao James.

Further controversy came with the inclusion of KCB midfielder Mathias Isogol, who is currently recovering from a groin injury. A video posted by KCB showed Isogol in the gym, still working on regaining full match fitness.

“If Mathias Isogol is still recovering, it’s highly questionable why he has been named in the Harambee Stars squad. Selecting a player who is not match-fit puts the team at a disadvantage. Kenya has too much talent to be sidelined by politics or favoritism,” wrote Jota Mutise.

McCarthy’s squad also includes several promising talents and a few surprise inclusions from lower league teams and rising clubs like Nairobi United, which recently stunned Gor Mahia in the Mozzart Bet Cup final.

The decision to exclude more established names in favour of youthful, locally-based players seems to align with CHAN’s primary objective—to showcase home-grown talent. However, it also highlights the tricky balancing act McCarthy faces as he tries to build a competitive team while winning the trust of fans hungry for success.

The tournament has already generated immense local excitement, especially with Kenya hosting a major continental event for the first time in years. Kasarani Stadium, which underwent major renovations, was officially handed over to the Local Organising Committee this week and will also host the CHAN final on 30 August.

Harambee Stars will begin their campaign against DR Congo on Sunday, 3 August, in what promises to be a tense and closely watched fixture. With expectations running high and fan scrutiny at an all-time peak, every squad decision is under the microscope.

As preparations continue, Kenyans are watching every move, hoping that the team McCarthy has assembled can deliver a memorable tournament and perhaps, rewrite history on home turf.
