Jannik Sinner stuns Alcaraz in four-set classic to win maiden Wimbledon title

WIMBLEDON 2025: Sinner beat Alcaraz to claim first Wimbledon crown in thrilling final

Jannik Sinner finally had his Wimbledon dream come true on Sunday as he defeated defending champion Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in an electrifying final at the All England Club. The 23-year-old Italian, who fell painfully short in last month’s French Open final, turned the tables on his Spanish rival to win his first Wimbledon title and fourth Grand Slam overall.

He became the first Italian man ever to lift the Wimbledon trophy, etching his name in history with a composed performance against the player who had beaten him five consecutive times prior to this epic showdown.

After losing the first set, he showed nerves of steel. He regrouped quickly and took control of the match, showcasing his trademark aggressive baseline game and mental toughness. The final, played in front of a packed Centre Court crowd that included British royalty, lasted just over three hours and ended with the Italian raising his arms in triumph.

Having squandered championship points in the Roland Garros final against Alcaraz five weeks earlier, Sinner made no mistake this time, sealing the victory on his second match point with a clinical serve.

Speaking after the match, Sinner couldn’t hide his emotion. “I’m living my dream,” he said, sparking loud cheers from the crowd. He also paid tribute to Alcaraz: “It’s so difficult to play against you. We have an amazing relationship on and off the court… Keep pushing, you are going to hold this trophy many times. You already have two!”

The rise of Sinner and Alcaraz has captivated the tennis world, with many seeing them as the new icons following the legendary era of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. Between them, they have now shared the last seven Grand Slam titles.

Sinner’s Wimbledon triumph was especially sweet given his painful collapse in Paris last month, where he led by two sets and failed to close out the match. “We tried to accept the loss and kept working,” Sinner reflected. “I’m grateful I’m healthy, and I have great people around me. This trophy means a lot.”

The road to glory wasn’t easy. Before Sunday, he had been on the losing end of five straight encounters with Alcaraz, including the Italian Open final after his return from a doping suspension. But at Wimbledon, he flipped the script in style, denying Alcaraz his chance at a sixth major title.

Alcaraz started the match strong, breaking Sinner early in the first set and clinching it with a stunning backhand winner. His celebration — finger to his ear as the crowd erupted — showed his confidence. But that swagger would fade as Sinner mounted his comeback.

Sinner broke Alcaraz in the opening game of the second set and never looked back. Despite a bizarre interruption caused by a champagne cork flying onto the court, the Italian stayed locked in and leveled the match with a thunderous forehand.

The third set saw both players holding serve until the ninth game when Sinner pounced after Alcaraz slipped on the baseline. Sinner capitalized on the momentum shift to take a two-sets-to-one lead.

In the fourth, Sinner broke early again and controlled the tempo. Despite flashes of brilliance from Alcaraz, the Italian’s focus never wavered. When the chance came to serve for the championship, Sinner stepped up with confidence, finishing the match in front of a roaring Centre Court.

Sinner’s journey at Wimbledon 2025 included a record-equalling start — losing just 17 games in the first three rounds. He survived a scare against Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round, who led by two sets before injury struck. Sinner then defeated Ben Shelton in the quarters and swept past Djokovic in the semis.

Alcaraz, aiming to become only the fifth man in the Open Era to win three straight Wimbledons, graciously congratulated his opponent. “It is a really well-deserved trophy after an unbelievable two weeks here in London,” Alcaraz said.

Sinner’s victory marks a defining moment in men’s tennis, confirming his status as a genuine Grand Slam force and further intensifying his growing rivalry with Alcaraz.
