148 coaches apply for hotly contested Gor Mahia head coach role

Coaches Worldwide Eye Gor Mahia Job as Club Seeks New Leadership

Kenyan football giants Gor Mahia FC have confirmed receiving a staggering 148 applications for the vacant head coach position, signaling the fierce competition for one of the most coveted coaching jobs in East Africa.

The record-breaking number of applications was revealed after the submission window closed on Thursday, July 10, 2025, highlighting the global interest in the 20-time FKF Premier League champions.

Among the applicants are coaches from across Africa and Europe, including two former Gor Mahia tacticians and three ex-AFC Leopards bosses seeking a return to the Kenyan Premier League spotlight.

In total, 539 applications were received for the various technical and management roles advertised by the club. These include head coach, assistant coach, team manager, team doctor, physiotherapist, strength and conditioning coach, goalkeeper coach, and Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

However, after the first round of screening, the club’s vetting committee deemed 311 applications valid, with several disqualified due to unmet qualifications, language barriers, or duplication of entries.

Gor Mahia Secretary General Nick Arum confirmed that the evaluation and shortlisting process is now fully underway. Speaking on Sunday, Arum assured fans that the club is keen on ensuring a timely appointment of the new technical bench.

“We have reviewed all the submissions and will be considering 247 qualified applications after a further review. From this group, we will identify the best candidates for interviews across all eight advertised positions.
Time is of the essence — we want our pre-season preparations to begin without delay,” said Arum.

For the head coach role alone, 148 coaches submitted their applications, making it the most sought-after position at the club. The assistant coach role attracted 21 applicants, while other roles like physiotherapist, team manager, and goalkeeper coach also drew significant interest.

According to Arum, the club will assess applicants based on qualifications, experience, financial expectations, and the club’s sporting ambitions.

“We will carefully analyze each application. While we appreciate the interest shown by so many, we must also be realistic about the club’s budget. Some applicants may have salary expectations beyond what Gor Mahia can accommodate,” he explained.

The level of interest reflects Gor Mahia’s enduring stature in African football, despite recent seasons marked by financial challenges and inconsistent performances. The club, which last won the league title in 2023, has already started restructuring — parting ways with five players and key members of the previous technical staff.

The next head coach will face the tough task of guiding K’Ogalo through a transition phase, aiming to reclaim domestic dominance and make a mark in continental competitions. With the FKF Premier League and CAF tournaments looming, the club’s management is determined to settle the technical bench before pre-season training kicks off.

Among the European applicants are seasoned professionals, some with experience coaching in top leagues and continental competitions. This has raised hopes among the K’Ogalo faithful that the next appointment could bring a fresh wave of ambition and professionalism to the club.

Notably, the return of familiar faces has also sparked debate. The interest shown by former Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards coaches underscores the pull and reputation of the Kenyan Premier League’s oldest rivalry — the Mashemeji Derby — and the challenge of steering two of Kenya’s most successful clubs.

As Gor Mahia continues to fine-tune its structure off the pitch, the pressure is mounting to get it right on the technical front. The management’s commitment to a transparent hiring process is seen as a bold step towards rebuilding confidence among fans and stakeholders.

The shortlisted candidates are expected to undergo interviews in the coming days, with the club keen on assembling a technical team that not only matches its ambitions but also understands the demands of managing a club with a huge following and high expectations.

As the club’s restructuring process unfolds, the race for the Gor Mahia head coach job promises to be one of the most watched stories in Kenyan football this pre-season.
