Defending champions St. Mary’s Yala showcased their dominance on the opening day of the Nyanza region Sevens championships, securing a spot in the quarter-finals with two impressive victories at Cardinal Otunga High School, Mosocho. Coached by George Kerima, St. Mary’s Yala defeated the hosts Cardinal Otunga High School 26-14 and followed it up with a commanding 34-5 win over St. Paul’s Gekano.

Kerima expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating, “I’m happy we have already qualified for the quarters. However, we want to win our last game so that we finish on top of our pool.”

Former champions Maseno School experienced a rollercoaster day with mixed results. They triumphed over Gendia 32-14 in their first match but suffered a surprising 17-10 defeat to Otieno Oyoo. The victory was particularly sweet for Otieno Oyoo, who avenged their 7-0 loss to Maseno in the Kisumu County finals.

Strong Start for Kisii School

Regional 15’s champions Kisii School began their quest for the Sevens title with a solid 22-7 win against St. Joseph’s Rapogi. Meanwhile, Friends School Anjego, coached by principal J.J. Masime, played to a 7-7 draw against Agoro Sare in a tightly contested match.

Girls’ Sevens Highlights

In the girls’ Sevens, favorites Nyakach demonstrated their prowess with a resounding 25-0 victory over Magare. Enkinda and St. Anne’s Nyangoge played to a 12-12 draw in a thrilling encounter. Nyakongo defeated Nyangoge 15-10, while Rangenyo edged out Asumbi 10-5. Nyaginchenche secured a 14-0 win over Kamagambo Day, rounding off an eventful day for the girls’ teams.

At Kisii School, Ambira, also known as Mobimba, secured their spot in the semi-finals with a 1-0 victory over Tonga and a 2-0 win against Matutu PAG. Matutu PAG received a boost as they were awarded their abandoned game against Sameta High School, which was called off due to crowd trouble while Matutu led 2-1.

Netball Dominance

Defending netball champions Oyugi Ogango and former champions Nyakach Girls both booked their spots in the semi-finals. Oyugi Ogango began their title defense with a commanding 43-13 win over Lambwe and later thrashed Omwari from Kisii 74-2. Nyakach, on the other hand, beat Nyango 26-13 in their opener and crushed Rirumi from Nyamira 62-14.

Basketball 3×3 Results

In the boys’ 3×3 basketball, Onjiko defeated Ekenyoro Technical 22-1, Ambira bested Migori Boys 16-4, Nyansiongo edged Agoro Sare 10-8, and Sawagongo overcame Nyanchwa 21-17.

For the girls, Tuk Jowi emerged victorious against Ogande 11-6, Nyakach dominated Sironga 8-1, Ngiya defeated Asumbi 16-8, and Sengera narrowly beat Manga Girls 11-10.
