Girls’ Rugby 7s Debuts at KSSSA Games, Sparking Enthusiasm and Hope for Gender Equality in Sports

The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) games have entered a new era with the exciting introduction of girls’ rugby 7s. This dynamic and fast-paced sport has generated immense enthusiasm among coaches, players, and supporters across participating schools. The inclusion of girls’ rugby 7s represents a significant milestone in promoting gender equality in sports, providing young female athletes with a platform to showcase their skills, build confidence, and potentially pursue careers in rugby.

A Groundbreaking Addition to KSSSA Games

Coaches’ Reactions

The introduction of girls’ rugby 7s has been met with widespread approval from coaches, who see it as a vital opportunity for their players to gain experience and exposure. Kevin Otuoma, the head coach of Nyakach Girls, expressed his excitement about the new addition. “It is encouraging to start the game. It helps to develop the game. We used to get discouraged because there was no tournament despite training a team for the whole year. But now we are happy we can finally play. This is a very big milestone for the growth of women’s rugby in Kenya,” Otuoma said.

Players’ Perspective

The players themselves are equally thrilled about the opportunity to compete in rugby 7s. Joan Ndemo, the captain of Nyakach Girls, highlighted how the sport has uncovered hidden talents in schools. Playing at the wing, Ndemo was crucial in scoring several tries that helped Nyakach secure the regional title. “I am happy that we are playing at this stage. I am proud of my teammates for the confidence displayed during these games. Our target is going to East Africa. As girls, we feel loved when they introduce rugby because some of us did not know our talents before. I foresee a great future for ladies’ rugby in Kenya,” Ndemo shared.

Parental Support

Ndemo’s mother, Teresa Nyatichi, voiced her pride in her daughter’s achievements and her commitment to supporting her talent. “I am proud of her because I never thought she could play this game. I want to nurture her talent because I want her to play internationally. I would love to watch her on the screens someday,” Nyatichi said, emphasizing the importance of parental encouragement in the development of young athletes.

Broader Impact of Girls’ Rugby 7s

Sidindi Girls’ Perspective

George Madigo, director of sports at Sidindi Girls, sees the introduction of girls’ rugby 7s as a key opportunity for exposure and potential scholarships for the players. “I am very proud that girls’ rugby 7s is finally with us. We are hopeful that it will expose our girls and that they will get scholarships. The girls are enjoying it and soon we will see a good number of teams coming in. It is exposing them, they have the talent, and they have a good avenue to showcase their skills,” Madigo explained.

Sidindi Girls’ captain, Valentine Akoth, shared her excitement about competing in the sport. “I am proud of myself and the rest of my teammates. It is our first time to compete in this match and I am happy because we have reached the regionals for the first time. I am a footballer and I never knew I could play rugby and make it to the regionals,” Akoth said. She also called on well-wishers to support the team with the necessary equipment to ensure they perform at their best. “I ask for a scholarship for our school. We do not have equipment like boots, jerseys, and balls,” she concluded.

Regional Champions and Future Prospects

Nyakach Girls emerged as the regional champions after a decisive 5-0 victory over Nyagichenche. Both Nyakach and Nyagichenche will advance to the national competitions, joined by Nyakongo and Sidindi. The regional games highlighted the growing talent and enthusiasm for girls’ rugby 7s, promising a bright future for the sport in Kenya.

Building a Strong Foundation

The success of the inaugural girls’ rugby 7s competition at the KSSSA games has laid a strong foundation for the sport’s future in Kenya. By providing young female athletes with the opportunity to compete at a high level, the KSSSA is fostering the development of rugby talent across the country. This initiative not only promotes gender equality but also enriches the overall sports culture in Kenya.

Long-Term Benefits

The long-term benefits of introducing girls’ rugby 7s are manifold. Beyond the immediate excitement and competition, the sport offers young women the chance to develop essential life skills such as teamwork, leadership, and resilience. Furthermore, the exposure gained from participating in high-level tournaments can open doors to scholarships and professional opportunities, both locally and internationally.

Conclusion

The introduction of girls’ rugby 7s at the KSSSA games marks a significant step forward for gender equality in Kenyan sports. The enthusiasm and excitement displayed by coaches, players, and parents underscore the positive impact of this initiative. As Nyakach, Nyagichenche, Nyakongo, and Sidindi prepare for the national stage, the future of girls’ rugby in Kenya looks incredibly promising. This groundbreaking addition to the KSSSA games not only enhances the sporting landscape but also empowers young female athletes to dream big and achieve their full potential.
