Pep Guardiola Reacts as Manchester City Fall to Celtic in Pre-season Opener Despite Haaland’s Presence

Manchester City kicked off their pre-season tour in the USA with a disappointing start, suffering a 4-3 defeat to Celtic. Despite the presence of star striker Erling Haaland, the English Premier League champions couldn’t secure a victory in this thrilling encounter. Spanish manager Pep Guardiola shared his insights on the match and reflected on the team’s performance.

Pre-season Challenges and Squad Rotation

Manchester City faced Celtic at the University of North Carolina’s Kenan Memorial Stadium, where they hoped to build momentum ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. However, the absence of several key players, still resting after their involvement in the European Championships, meant Guardiola had to field a mix of experienced stars and younger talents.

“Pre-season matches are always challenging,” Guardiola noted. “We are missing some of our top players, but this gives an opportunity to evaluate our younger squad members and see how they adapt to the team’s playing style.”

Erling Haaland Leads the Line

Erling Haaland, wearing the captain’s armband for the first time, was a notable presence on the pitch. The Norwegian striker, known for his incredible goal-scoring prowess, was expected to lead City’s attack and provide the cutting edge they needed. Haaland managed to find the back of the net, equalizing in the 57th minute with a powerful header from an Oscar Bobb cross, showcasing his aerial ability and leadership.

“Haaland is an exceptional player and a natural leader,” Guardiola commented. “His performance today, especially wearing the captain’s armband, was commendable. He is crucial for us, and his goal demonstrates his consistent threat in front of the goal.”

Celtic’s Tactical Brilliance

Celtic, on the other hand, approached the game with determination and tactical acumen. Nicolas Kuhn was the standout performer for the Scottish champions, scoring twice in the first half. His goals were complemented by a decisive strike from Honduran international Luis Palma in the 68th minute, sealing the win for Celtic.

“Celtic played a great game. They were sharp and took their chances well,” Guardiola acknowledged. “They have a strong team and executed their game plan effectively.”

Defensive Issues and Areas for Improvement

While City showcased their attacking capabilities, defensive lapses were evident throughout the match. Guardiola emphasized the need to address these issues before the season starts.

“We conceded goals that we could have avoided,” Guardiola said. “Defensively, we need to be more organized and ensure we maintain our structure throughout the game. These pre-season matches are about identifying and correcting such mistakes.”

Integration of Young Talent

Despite the loss, the match provided valuable insights into the potential of City’s younger players. Argentine substitute Maximo Perrone scored with his first touch of the ball seconds into the second half, signaling his readiness to contribute at a higher level.

“Seeing our young players step up and perform is encouraging,” Guardiola remarked. “Perrone’s goal was a highlight, and it shows that our youth academy is producing talented individuals ready to make an impact.”

Looking Ahead

As Manchester City continues their pre-season tour in the USA, Guardiola remains focused on preparing his squad for the upcoming season. The manager is keen on integrating new signings and ensuring that all players are match-fit and tactically aware.

“This is just the beginning of our pre-season journey,” Guardiola stated. “We have more
