Mathare United Appoints John Kamau as Head Coach, Mohammed Muchula Named Assistant

Mathare United has officially appointed John Kamau as their new head coach on a one-year contract, marking a significant move in the club’s efforts to stabilize and strengthen their position in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL). Kamau steps into the role following the departure of veteran coach Francis Kimanzi, who recently parted ways with the Slum Boys after successfully guiding them back to the FKF Premier League.

Kamau is no stranger to Mathare United, having previously managed the team in 2022. His coaching resume includes stints at Thika United and KCB, showcasing his extensive experience and understanding of Kenyan football. Most recently, Kamau was at the helm of Posta Rangers until April 2024. His return to Mathare United is seen as a strategic decision by the club’s management, who believe his familiarity with the club’s values and culture will be instrumental in their upcoming campaign.

“Kamau is an experienced coach who knows the club well, and we expect him to excel with us,” a club insider shared. This sentiment reflects the confidence the club has in Kamau’s ability to lead the team through the challenges ahead.

Kamau’s primary mission will be to help Mathare United regain stability in the FKF Premier League. The club has faced a turbulent period, including relegation to the National Super League (NSL) during the 2022–23 season. Under Kimanzi’s guidance, Mathare finished second in the NSL with 82 points, just behind Mara Sugar, thus securing their return to the top flight. This achievement was a crucial step in the club’s recovery, and Kamau’s task will be to build on this foundation.

Kimanzi’s departure from Mathare United was by mutual agreement. He played a pivotal role in the club’s recent successes and is now reportedly considering a move to Tabora United in the Tanzania Mainland Premier League. If this move materializes, it would be Kimanzi’s first managerial role outside Kenya, marking a new chapter in his coaching career.

“We hadn’t committed Kimanzi to a contract. As our old boy, he was just helping us on a gentleman’s agreement, and we thank him for ensuring we return to the KPL,” said Mathare CEO Jecton Obure in an earlier discussion. This statement underscores the informal yet impactful nature of Kimanzi’s recent tenure with the club.

Joining Kamau in the coaching team is Mohammed Muchula, who has been appointed as the assistant coach. Muchula comes from Mombasa Stars, a team in the National Super League (NSL). His addition is expected to bring a fresh perspective and support Kamau in implementing strategic plans for the team.

The combined experience of Kamau and Muchula is anticipated to bring a blend of seasoned insight and innovative approaches to Mathare United’s gameplay. Their immediate focus will be on ensuring that the team is well-prepared and competitive in the FKF Premier League. This involves not only tactical and technical training but also fostering a strong team spirit and resilience among the players.

Mathare United has a rich history in Kenyan football, and the new coaching appointments are part of a broader strategy to reclaim their position as one of the top teams in the league. The club’s management and supporters are hopeful that Kamau and Muchula will lead the team to a successful season, characterized by stability and growth.

In conclusion, John Kamau’s appointment as head coach, along with Mohammed Muchula as his assistant, marks a pivotal moment for Mathare United. As the team embarks on a new season in the FKF Premier League, the leadership and experience of the new coaching duo will be crucial in navigating the challenges and achieving the club’s goals.
