Robert Matano Departs Tusker FC, Reflects on Six-Year Tenure and New Challenges

Robert Matano, the celebrated FKF Premier League-winning coach, has opened up about his departure from Tusker FC, marking the end of a remarkable six-year tenure with the club. Matano, who left the Ruaraka-based club in July, is widely regarded as one of the most successful coaches in Tusker’s history, having secured three league titles and numerous domestic cups. Now, as he transitions to Sofapaka, he discusses his reasons for leaving and his reflections on his time at Tusker.

Matano’s exit from Tusker FC was primarily due to the expiration of his contract, but he also felt it was time to seek new challenges after his substantial achievements with the club. “I left because my contract expired. Furthermore, I felt it was time for a new challenge after all I had achieved at Tusker. I have no regrets because I gave my best and did everything within my capacity,” Matano revealed to Citizen Digital.

During his tenure, Matano expressed deep appreciation for Tusker’s management, acknowledging their support which enabled him to achieve significant milestones. “I thank the management for the opportunity to work with them again. During this period, I won the league three times, the Kenyan Super Cup, and the Top 8 Cup. I am very proud of these achievements. I made Tusker a title contender every season,” he stated.

However, Matano also shed light on the challenges faced in the final three seasons, highlighting issues that extended beyond the pitch. “We faced many difficulties in the last three seasons. The management prioritized paying players’ salaries but neglected other crucial areas. While I won’t go into detail publicly, there were significant issues behind the scenes,” he mentioned. These challenges, coupled with a desire for new opportunities, contributed to his decision to leave.

Matano’s departure has inevitably raised questions about its potential impact on Tusker’s performance and stability. Insiders suggest that while Matano was open to extending his stay, disagreements over player signings with the club’s hierarchy played a role in his decision to leave. “I believe that with comprehensive support, we could have won the league last season and the recently concluded one. I hope they address these shortcomings so my successor can succeed, as I am leaving behind a stable team,” Matano commented.

Matano first joined Tusker FC in 2012 and returned in 2018, leading the club through some of its most successful periods. In his second stint, he guided the team to consecutive Premier League titles in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons, a Kenyan Super Cup in 2021-22, and a Top 8 Cup victory. His achievements made him the first coach to win three league titles with Tusker, surpassing the previous record held by Jacob ‘Ghost’ Mulee.

Under Matano’s leadership, the Brewers not only secured significant domestic success but also consistently challenged for titles, breaking the dominance of traditional giants like Gor Mahia. His tactical acumen and ability to motivate his players were crucial in maintaining Tusker’s competitive edge, even in the face of financial and administrative hurdles.

Matano’s departure marks the end of an era for Tusker FC and presents a new challenge for the club in finding a successor who can continue his legacy. His move to Sofapaka brings new opportunities and challenges, where he aims to replicate his success and possibly elevate the team to new heights.

Reflecting on his career, Matano remains optimistic and committed to the future. “I am excited about the new challenges ahead with Sofapaka. Every end is a new beginning, and I believe in my ability to make a significant impact wherever I go,” he stated.

In conclusion, Robert Matano’s six-year journey with Tusker FC has been one of remarkable success and significant challenges. As he embarks on a new chapter with Sofapaka, he leaves behind a legacy of excellence and resilience, inspiring both his former team and his new one to strive for greatness. The football community will keenly watch how Tusker adapts to this change and how Matano continues to shape the future of Kenyan football.
