KIPYEGON 5000M SILVER MEDAL REINSTATED AFTER APPEAL

Faith Kipyegon’s Silver Medal Reinstated After Successful Appeal

After a night of emotional roller coaster at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Faith Kipyegon’s silver medal position in the women’s 5000m race was reinstated following a successful appeal by Athletics Kenya. This decision brought a wave of relief and joy to the Kenyan team and supporters, marking Kenya’s third medal of the games.

Athletics Kenya, in a statement, revealed that the appeal was spearheaded by Milka Chemo, Bernard Ouma, and Team Manager Peter Angwenyi. Their efforts proved fruitful as they managed to overturn the initial disqualification, ensuring that Kipyegon retained her rightful place on the podium.

Faith Kipyegon had been disqualified for allegedly obstructing Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay. However, the successful appeal not only reinstated her silver medal but also confirmed Kenya’s top-two finish in a charged final that featured some of the world’s legendary runners.

The race itself was intense and filled with high drama. Beatrice Chebet, the current 10,000m world record holder, surged past Faith Kipyegon with 60 meters to go, winning the race in 14:28.65. Netherlands’ veteran Sifan Hassan claimed bronze with a time of 14:30.61.

The final two laps saw a tightly bunched leading group, with Faith Kipyegon positioned on the inside. Tsegay, aiming for the same spot, attempted to overtake Faith Kipyegon. In the ensuing tussle, Faith Kipyegon tried to defend her position, resulting in her grabbing Tsegay’s left elbow. Tsegay responded by shoving Faith Kipyegon, who struggled to maintain her balance and avoid running off the track. This high-speed altercation left Tsegay trailing, while Chebet and Faith Kipyegon pressed on, initially believing they had secured both gold and silver for Kenya.

The Kenyan duo celebrated their apparent success, hugging and waving the Kenyan flag amidst wild applause from the packed Stade de France. However, the joy was short-lived as an announcement by the organizers later disqualified Faith Kipyegon.

“I am so sad for Faith and I hope justice will be done because Faith did not do anything bad,” Chebet told reporters after the race. “I think she will get it (the medal) in the end.”

Faith Kipyegon, overcome with emotion, broke down in tears and cut short her media interviews upon hearing the news of her disqualification. Yet, at 11:16 pm, reporters were informed that Faith Kipyegon’s medal had been reinstated following the successful appeal.

Triumph of Fairness as Faith Kipyegon’s Medal is Reinstated

The reinstatement decision downgraded defending champion Sifan Hassan to bronze while Italy’s Nadia Battocletti claimed fourth place, ahead of Kenya’s Margaret Chelimo, who finished fifth.

“I am really happy that Faith gets her medal back. Faith deserves her silver medal,” Hassan said at a midnight conference. “I love my bronze medal. It doesn’t matter to me what medal I get or position I finish as long as there is fairness.”

The reinstatement of Faith’s medal sparked jubilation and widespread relief among many Kenyans. President William Ruto and several renowned Kenyan leaders quickly took to social media to express their delight, celebrating the triumph of justice for Faith Kipyegon.

The focus now shifts to Faith’s next challenge as she aims to complete a hat-trick of 1500m gold medals at the Olympic stage. She is set to compete in the semi-finals on Thursday night. Meanwhile, her compatriot Chebet remains focused on achieving a golden double as she prepares for the 10,000m finals on Friday night.

Faith Kipyegon’s journey has been one of perseverance, resilience, and extraordinary talent. Her reinstated silver medal not only adds to her impressive list of accolades but also reinforces her status as one of Kenya’s most celebrated athletes. The emotional night at the Paris 2024 Olympics will be remembered for the dramatic twists and the ultimate triumph of fairness and justice.

As  Kipyegon prepares for her next race, the support from her fans and the entire nation will undoubtedly be a significant source of motivation.
