Kenya Police Bullets Held to Frustrating Draw in CECAFA Opener Against Yei Joint Stars

Kenya Police Bullets Held to Goalless Draw by Yei Joint Stars in CECAFA Opener

Kenya Police Bullets began their much-anticipated journey in the CECAFA Zonal qualifiers for the CAF Women’s Champions League with a 0-0 draw against Yei Joint Stars at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This opening match, which marked the Bullets’ debut on the continental stage under the guidance of coach Beldine Odemba, was filled with promise but ultimately ended in frustration as the team failed to capitalize on their numerous scoring opportunities.

The match kicked off with Kenya Police Bullets showing their intent to dominate. The team, fresh from their successful campaign in the Kenya Women Premier League (KWPL), looked eager to make their mark in the CECAFA Zonal qualifiers. From the first whistle, the Bullets controlled possession, moving the ball with purpose and creating several early chances. Lucy Kwekwe, one of the standout players for the Bullets, was quick to make her presence felt. In the opening minutes, she carved out the first real opportunity for her side, but her effort was well-saved by Yei Joint Stars’ goalkeeper, who would prove to be a thorn in the Bullets’ side throughout the match.

Elizabeth Ochaka also had a chance to break the deadlock soon after. Rising high to meet a cross, she directed a powerful header towards goal, but once again, Yei’s goalkeeper was equal to the task, pulling off an impressive save to keep the score level. The Bullets continued to press, with their midfield and attack working in tandem to break down the resilient defense of Yei Joint Stars.

As the first half progressed, the Bullets’ dominance grew, and it seemed only a matter of time before they would find the back of the net. Their relentless pressure nearly paid off in the final moments of the first half when Diana Wacera thought she had given her team the lead. Wacera, finding herself in space after a well-timed run, slotted the ball past the goalkeeper, only for her effort to be ruled offside. The disallowed goal was a blow to the Bullets, who had worked tirelessly to break through Yei’s defense. The teams went into the halftime break with the score still locked at 0-0.

The second half saw Kenya Police Bullets continue where they left off, dominating possession and creating chances. However, the story remained the same: despite their control of the game, the Bullets were unable to convert their chances into goals. Coach Beldine Odemba made several tactical adjustments in an attempt to break the deadlock, but Yei Joint Stars remained resolute, defending deep and frustrating the Bullets’ attacking efforts.

One of the key moments of the second half came when Lucy Kwekwe once again found herself in a promising position. Latching onto a through ball, she raced towards goal, but her shot was expertly saved by the Yei goalkeeper, who was having an outstanding game. The frustration among the  police players and coaching staff was palpable as chance after chance went begging.

As the clock ticked down, the Bullets intensified their search for a winner. They continued to push forward, with their defense moving higher up the pitch to support the attack. This left them vulnerable to counterattacks, but Yei Joint Stars were unable to take advantage of the space left behind. Despite their best efforts, the Bullets could not find a way through, and the match ended in a goalless stalemate.

This result leaves Kenya Police Bullets with a single point from their opening match, a situation they will need to improve on in their upcoming fixtures if they are to advance in the tournament. The team will now turn their focus to their next match against CBE Women FC, a fixture that will be crucial in determining their chances of reaching the semifinals. A win in that game is vital for the Bullets, not just to keep their qualification hopes alive but also to boost their confidence after a frustrating start to their CECAFA campaign.

While the draw was a disappointing result for Kenya Police Bullets, there were positives to take from the match. The team’s ability to dominate possession and create opportunities will be encouraging for coach Beldine Odemba as she prepares her side for the challenges ahead. However, the Bullets will need to be more clinical in front of goal if they are to make their mark in this tournament and follow in the footsteps of Vihiga Queens, who qualified for the CAF Women’s Champions League in 2021.

Yei Joint Stars, on the other hand, will be pleased with their defensive performance. They managed to keep a clean sheet against a strong Kenya Police Bullets side, and their goalkeeper was instrumental in earning them a valuable point. However, they will also need to improve their attacking play if they hope to progress in the tournament.

As the CECAFA Zonal qualifiers continue, all eyes will be on Kenya Police Bullets as they seek to secure their first victory and strengthen their bid for a place in the semifinals. With the quality and determination in their squad, the Bullets have the potential to bounce back and make a deep run in the tournament, but they will need to find their scoring touch to do so.

The next few days will be crucial for the Bullets as they regroup and prepare for their second match. A win against CBE Women FC could be the catalyst they need to kickstart their campaign and move closer to achieving their goal of qualifying for the CAF Women’s Champions League. For now, the focus will be on turning the positives from their draw with Yei Joint Stars into a winning performance in their next outing.
