Diaz Shines as Liverpool Thrash Manchester United 3-0

Liverpool extended their flawless start to the Premier League season with a convincing 3-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, maintaining new manager Arne Slot’s perfect record. Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah were the driving forces behind the victory, propelling Liverpool to second place in the standings, just behind Manchester City on goal difference.

Slot, who arrived from Feyenoord during the summer, has guided Liverpool to a seamless transition with three consecutive wins, all achieved without conceding a goal. This comprehensive victory was especially satisfying for Liverpool supporters, as Manchester United were thoroughly outplayed, leading to thousands of frustrated fans leaving the stadium early.

The breakthrough came in the 35th minute when United’s Casemiro lost possession, allowing Mohamed Salah to whip in a precise cross that Diaz headed home. Just seven minutes later, Casemiro’s troubles continued as he once again surrendered the ball to Liverpool, setting the stage for Diaz to score his second goal of the match, assisted by Salah.

Liverpool’s control of the game was further cemented early in the second half when Salah hammered in his third goal of the season after a well-timed pass from Dominik Szoboszlai. This goal marked Salah’s 10th in nine appearances at Old Trafford, underscoring his status as a consistent threat to Manchester United.

Arne Slot’s early success at Liverpool is historic; he is the first permanent Liverpool manager since Bob Paisley in 1975 to win his debut league match against Manchester United. Additionally, Slot becomes the first manager since Sven-Goran Eriksson in 2007 to win his first three Premier League games without conceding a goal.

Meanwhile, Manchester United’s woes continue under Erik ten Hag. The Dutch manager, who narrowly retained his position after a summer review that included talks with former Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel, is now under mounting pressure. Although last season’s surprise FA Cup victory over Manchester City temporarily secured his job, United’s poor form, coupled with their eighth-place finish last season, has left ten Hag on increasingly shaky ground.

Chelsea also faced a frustrating result on Sunday, being held to a 1-1 draw by Crystal Palace at Stamford Bridge. Under new manager Enzo Maresca, the Blues have secured only one win in their first three league matches, despite a busy summer of signings. Maresca remains optimistic about the team’s progress, even though their results have been inconsistent.

Chelsea took the lead in the 25th minute when Noni Madueke connected with Cole Palmer, who provided the assist for Nicolas Jackson’s goal. However, Chelsea couldn’t maintain their advantage as Crystal Palace grew into the game and eventually found an equalizer.

Maresca’s frustration was palpable when Palace midfielder Will Hughes escaped a second yellow card after a challenge on Palmer. This decision could have shifted the game in Chelsea’s favor, but the Blues failed to make the most of their opportunities, resulting in yet another unsatisfactory outcome. Despite the draw, Maresca remains confident that his team is on the right path, though they continue to search for consistency in their performances.
