Ababu Namwamba Hands Over a Solid Foundation for Kipchumba Murkomen’s Success as Sports CS

Former Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has expressed strong confidence in his successor, Kipchumba Murkomen, asserting that the new Sports CS will have a smooth tenure, thanks to the robust foundation laid during his own time at the helm. Namwamba, who was recently removed from his position by President William Ruto amidst widespread protests, believes that Murkomen is well-equipped to continue the progress and tackle the challenges within the Sports Ministry.

Namwamba, who served as Sports CS for 21 months, took over the Ministry at a time when it was grappling with numerous challenges, including international bans on key sports like football and a doping crisis that had severely damaged Kenya’s reputation on the global stage. Reflecting on the state of the Ministry when he assumed office, Namwamba noted, “I inherited a Ministry rock bottom on performance, impact, and ratings, worsened by multiple international bans on sports like football and a doping crisis.”

Despite the difficult circumstances, Namwamba embarked on an ambitious reform agenda aimed at revitalizing the Sports Ministry and restoring Kenya’s position as a powerhouse in international sports. Over his tenure, he implemented a series of initiatives and reforms that he believes have set the stage for continued success under Murkomen’s leadership.

One of Namwamba’s most significant achievements was lifting the international suspensions that had been imposed on Kenyan sports, particularly in football and swimming. These suspensions had left Kenyan athletes and teams sidelined from international competitions, but Namwamba’s efforts successfully reinstated Kenya’s participation in the global sports arena. Moreover, he played a pivotal role in securing the hosting rights for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027, a major accomplishment that he believes will have long-term benefits for the country’s sports infrastructure and economy.

Under Namwamba’s leadership, the Ministry also developed a comprehensive Sports and Arts Infrastructure Masterplan, which has already begun to bear fruit. This masterplan included the overhaul and modernization of key sports facilities such as Kasarani Stadium, Nyayo Stadium, Kip Keino Stadium, Kanduyi Stadium, and Bukhungu Stadium, as well as the refurbishment of the Kenya National Theatre. These projects were aimed at creating world-class facilities that would not only benefit athletes but also attract international events and investment.

Namwamba also emphasized the strides made in monetizing sports and the arts through initiatives like Talanta Hela and WhozNext. These programs were designed to increase financial benefits for athletes and creatives by providing platforms for talent development, recognition, and reward. Additionally, Namwamba forged historic international partnerships with organizations such as the NBA, the Grammys, and other global entities, which have helped elevate Kenyan sports and creative industries to new heights.

Despite these achievements, Namwamba acknowledged that challenges remain, particularly in areas such as integrity, governance, and addressing competence gaps within the Ministry. He expressed confidence that Murkomen, with his knowledge and passion for the role, is well-positioned to address these challenges and build on the momentum established during his tenure.

“If I were to pick a successor, I wouldn’t have wished for anyone better,” Namwamba said. “His [Murkomen’s] knowledge and passion are beyond question. I have no doubt he will sustain the phenomenal momentum I have set and take this important space to the ultimate heights as envisaged in The Plan and the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).”

Namwamba’s endorsement of Murkomen underscores his belief that the Sports Ministry is on the right path and that the groundwork laid during his tenure will provide a strong foundation for continued success. He expressed confidence that Murkomen will not only maintain the progress made but also introduce new initiatives that will further advance Kenya’s position in the global sports arena.

As Murkomen takes over the reins at the Sports Ministry, he inherits a portfolio that has seen significant transformation over the past two years. The expectations are high, given Kenya’s storied history in sports and the ambitious plans laid out by Namwamba. However, Namwamba’s confidence in his successor suggests that the transition will be smooth and that Murkomen is well-prepared to lead the Ministry through the next phase of its development.

In addition to continuing the projects and initiatives started by Namwamba, Murkomen will likely face new challenges and opportunities that will require innovative approaches and solutions. However, with the support of a robust infrastructure, a clear strategic direction, and a strong legacy to build upon, Murkomen has the potential to further elevate Kenyan sports and ensure that the country remains a dominant force on the international stage.

As the former Sports CS hands over the baton, he leaves with a sense of pride in the work accomplished and optimism for the future under Murkomen’s leadership. The foundation has been laid, and now it is up to the new Sports CS to continue the journey, bringing new energy and ideas to propel Kenyan sports to even greater heights
