Kenyan athletics coach Julius Kirwa has lauded Andrew Alamisi’s recent triumph in the 5,000m at the World U20 Championships as a promising sign for the future of Kenya’s long-distance running. Alamisi secured gold in Lima, Peru, with a time of 13:41.14, marking Kenya’s first win in this event at the U20 level. His victory came after a tight contest against Ethiopia’s Abdisa Fayisa and Uganda’s Keneth Kiprop, showcasing Kenya’s resurgence in distance running.
Kirwa commended Alamisi’s achievement, saying, “Alamisi’s gold medal is not only a personal triumph but also a hopeful sign for Kenya’s 5,000m prospects. It reflects our country’s potential to regain its leading status in global distance running.”

Though Alamisi’s win was a highlight, his fellow athlete Ishmael Rokitto, who had previously won the World U20 cross country title in 2023, fell short of the podium, finishing fourth with a time of 13:42.27. On the women’s side, Mercy Chepkemoi and Sheila Jebet finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in their events. The women’s 5,000m was won by Ethiopia’s Medina Eisa, who set a new course record with a time of 14:39.71.
Kirwa emphasized the need for continued support and monitoring of emerging junior talent to keep Kenya competitive internationally. Alamisi’s success fuels optimism that Kenya can reassert its dominance in the 5,000m at the upcoming World Championships in Tokyo, Japan.
