Who Starts? Amorim Faces Dilemma with Rashford, Garnacho, and Amad at Manchester United

Ruben Amorim, Manchester United’s new head coach, has walked into Old Trafford with a bold vision and a fresh approach. However, his first major challenge lies in solving a selection headache many managers would envy.

With Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Amad Diallo all vying for the wide forward roles in Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 formation, not everyone can start regularly.

It’s a dilemma that highlights the depth of attacking talent at United but also demands a delicate balance between rotation, form, and player satisfaction.

Amorim is expected to bring his signature 3-4-3 system, which brought him great success at Sporting CP. This tactical approach places significant importance on wide forwards flanking a central striker, likely to be Rasmus Højlund. While the formation provides attacking fluidity and defensive cover through wing-backs, it also limits the starting spots for wide players to just two.

The result? A fierce battle between Rashford, Garnacho, and Amad for a place in the starting XI. Each brings unique skills, versatility, and a hunger to impress.

Marcus Rashford: The Proven Goalscorer

At 27, Marcus Rashford remains United’s most proven attacking threat. Though his form has been inconsistent over the last 18 months, Rashford’s 30-goal haul during the 2022/23 season reminds everyone of his elite capabilities. He has also hit 20+ goals in two other seasons, proving his consistency as a top-tier forward when at his best.

Primarily a left winger, Rashford’s explosive pace and finishing make him lethal in counterattacks. While he has occasionally played on the right and even centrally, the left remains his most natural position.

For Amorim, unlocking Rashford’s full potential will be key to reigniting United’s attack. The question is whether Rashford’s experience and track record give him the edge over younger contenders.

Alejandro Garnacho: The Rising Star

At just 20 years old, Alejandro Garnacho is already drawing comparisons to a young Cristiano Ronaldo. The Argentine winger has delivered game-changing moments this season, scoring six of his seven goals from his preferred position on the left. His electrifying pace, ability to take on defenders, and knack for clutch performances make him one of United’s brightest talents.

However, Garnacho still needs to develop consistency in his game, something that comes with experience. At the same age, Ronaldo was a raw talent who exploded into superstardom by the time he turned 21. Garnacho could follow a similar trajectory if nurtured correctly, but his overlap with Rashford for the left-wing role complicates Amorim’s decisions.

If both Rashford and Garnacho are to start, one would need to adapt to playing out of position. So far, this has been tried with mixed results, leaving Amorim with a tough choice about prioritizing development or proven ability.

Amad Diallo: The Natural Right Winger

Unlike Rashford and Garnacho, Amad Diallo is most comfortable playing on the right, offering Amorim a natural fit for that role. However, Amad is also the least experienced of the trio at the Premier League level. Signed for a significant fee of £37 million at just 18 years old, Amad has been a slow burner, spending time on loan at Rangers and Sunderland to build his confidence and skills.

His spell at Sunderland was particularly promising, where he was one of the standout players in the Championship, showcasing his technical ability, creativity, and eye for goal. Despite a frustrating injury layoff and limited opportunities under Erik ten Hag, Amad has shown glimpses of brilliance since returning to the squad.

At 22, he offers a unique blend of talent and tactical fit, but giving him regular starts would mean leaving one of the more established stars—Rashford or Garnacho—on the bench.

Amorim’s challenge lies in finding the right combination to maximize United’s attacking potential while managing the expectations of his players. Rotation will undoubtedly play a key role, especially with United competing on multiple fronts. However, the chemistry between wide forwards and Højlund will be crucial, making it essential to establish a relatively stable lineup.

One potential approach could involve Rashford starting on the left, with Amad taking the right-wing position to provide balance. Garnacho, then, could be used as an impact substitute, leveraging his pace and energy against tired defenses. Alternatively, Amorim might rotate all three based on form, fitness, and specific matchups, ensuring no one feels sidelined.

Defensive Contributions and Adaptability

Another factor Amorim will consider is defensive work rate. In a 3-4-3 formation, wide forwards are often required to track back and support their wing-backs. Rashford, Garnacho, and Amad must all demonstrate their willingness to contribute defensively, as this could influence Amorim’s choices.

Additionally, their ability to adapt to different positions will be vital. Rashford’s versatility gives him an edge, but Garnacho and Amad will need to show they can be effective even when not deployed in their favorite roles.

A Healthy Headache

While the selection dilemma is challenging, it’s the kind of “problem” most managers dream of. Having multiple high-quality options allows Amorim to adapt his tactics and personnel to different scenarios, keeping opponents guessing.

For United fans, the prospect of seeing Rashford rediscover his best form, Garnacho grow into a superstar, and Amad fulfill his potential is an exciting one. Amorim’s ability to manage these players effectively could be the key to transforming United’s fortunes and bringing success back to Old Trafford.
