Arsenal Run Riot in Eindhoven, Hit Seven Past PSV to All But Seal Quarter-Final Spot
Arsenal delivered a ruthless attacking display in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 first leg, dismantling PSV Eindhoven 7-1 at the Philips Stadion. The emphatic victory puts Mikel Arteta’s side in a dominant position ahead of the second leg at the Emirates, leaving the Dutch side with little hope of a comeback.
Arsenal Make a Statement in Eindhoven
Heading into the match, Arsenal had never won in their previous four visits to the Philips Stadion. However, the Gunners put those struggles behind them with an attacking masterclass, proving too strong for PSV from the outset.
The visitors thought they had taken an early lead when Declan Rice slotted home, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Moments later, PSV almost took advantage of a mistake from David Raya, but Ismael Saibari’s powerful effort smashed off the crossbar, and Ryan Flamingo sent his follow-up wide.
PSV’s missed opportunity proved costly as Arsenal responded with a flurry of goals.
Quick-Fire Goals Give Arsenal Command
Declan Rice, a key figure in Arsenal’s midfield, was instrumental in the opening goal. His precise cross to the back post found Jurrien Timber, who rose above the defense to head home and put the Gunners ahead.
Just minutes later, Arsenal doubled their lead with a goal crafted by their youth academy. Myles Lewis-Skelly delivered a perfect ball into the path of Ethan Nwaneri, who slotted it past Walter Benítez to become the third-youngest scorer in Champions League knockout history.

PSV struggled to cope with Arsenal’s relentless pressure, and things went from bad to worse when a defensive mix-up gifted Mikel Merino the chance to fire into the bottom corner. Within 30 minutes, the visitors were 3-0 up, leaving the home side shell-shocked.
PSV’s Brief Resurgence Falls Short
Despite being outplayed, PSV were handed a lifeline just before halftime. Thomas Partey fouled Luuk de Jong in the box, and Noa Lang confidently converted the penalty to make it 3-1.
The Dutch side showed signs of life as De Jong came close again, but Arsenal wasted no time restoring their three-goal advantage after the break.
Arsenal Crush Any Hopes of a Comeback
It took just over a minute into the second half for Arsenal to strike again, this time through captain Martin Ødegaard. The Norwegian playmaker found space on the edge of the area and guided his shot past Benítez, re-establishing Arsenal’s control.

Before PSV could react, Arsenal struck once more, making it five in stunning fashion. Leandro Trossard combined with Riccardo Calafiori before dinking a composed finish over the goalkeeper.
As PSV searched for a response, De Jong had a header saved, but the hosts could not contain Arsenal’s momentum. Ødegaard was at the heart of things again, picking up the ball on the edge of the box before curling in a stunning shot despite Benítez getting a hand to it.
Historic Night for Arsenal
Not satisfied with six, Arsenal added a seventh when Ødegaard turned provider, setting up Calafiori for a well-taken finish to cap off a historic night for the Gunners.
The 7-1 demolition marked Arsenal’s fifth consecutive win in the Champions League, a feat they last achieved in the 2005/06 season when they reached the final. It was also PSV’s heaviest-ever home defeat in European competition, effectively sealing Arsenal’s place in the quarter-finals.
The Road Ahead
With a six-goal cushion heading into the second leg at the Emirates, Arsenal are in cruise control and can start planning for the next stage of the competition. PSV, meanwhile, will need a miracle to turn things around and avoid an embarrassing exit.
Arteta’s men will now shift their focus back to the Premier League as they continue their domestic title challenge, knowing that their European ambitions remain well on track.
