Calhanoglu’s Penalty Enough as Arsenal Struggles to Finish at San Siro

Arsenal suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Inter Milan at the San Siro in their latest Champions League clash, in a game marked by missed opportunities, defensive prowess, and high drama on the pitch.

Despite dominating several key stats, including expected goals (xG), the gunners couldn’t capitalize on their chances, leaving the Italian side to claim victory with a single goal from Hakan Calhanoglu’s late first-half penalty.

This setback leaves Arsenal in a precarious 12th position in the Champions League standings, outside of automatic qualification for the Last 16.

From the first whistle, Inter showed they were a force to be reckoned with. The match was far from Arsenal’s reach even though the stats suggest otherwise.

Inter’s defensive line, led by Dutch right-back Denzel Dumfries and center-backs Yann Bisseck and Stefan de Vrij, proved formidable, thwarting every Arsenal attempt with blocks, interceptions, and quick reactions.

Inter Milan’s 1.19 xG was modest but effectively utilized, as Calhanoglu converted his chance from the penalty spot in added time in the first half. This goal, resulting from a Merino handball after a VAR review, proved to be the defining moment of the match.

Arsenal’s Struggles in the Final Third

Though the gunners displayed intent and urgency throughout the match, their execution left much to be desired. Despite an impressive xG of 2.22, Arsenal couldn’t break down Inter’s resilient defense or find the back of the net.

Kai Havertz alone had three attempts, with efforts also coming from Gabriel Martinelli, William Saliba, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Jesus, but all to no avail.

Inter’s goalkeeper, Yann Sommer, was solid, calmly handling Arsenal’s efforts, while his defenders made several crucial blocks, including a heroic last-minute stop by De Vrij.

The gunner’s frustrations were compounded as they failed to turn their 15 shots and numerous corner kicks into concrete goals. They registered an impressive tally in terms of chances but struggled with finishing, a recurring issue for the Gunners in this season’s Champions League.

Second-Half Onslaught by Arsenal Ends in Disappointment

The gunners pushed hard in the second half, determined to salvage a point. Manager Mikel Arteta made several attack-focused substitutions, including bringing on captain Martin Ødegaard and young midfielder Ethan Nwaneri, who impressed with his dynamism.

However, Inter’s defense remained steadfast. Arsenal’s attempts to exploit space through crosses from Martinelli and Saka often met the heads of Inter’s defenders, especially Benjamin Pavard and Stefan de Vrij.

Inter, meanwhile, concentrated on defending their lead and managing possession. Bisseck, particularly, was a rock in defense, making crucial blocks to deny Arsenal’s forward players any clean shots on goal.

Dumfries continued to be a standout, combining defensive grit with attacking forays that kept Arsenal’s defense on edge.

Defensive Masterclass by Inter Milan

Inter’s strategy of holding back and defending as a unit paid off, with a clean sheet marking their fourth consecutive shutout in this Champions League campaign.

This defensive stability has become the hallmark of Inter’s success in Europe this season. Dumfries, Bisseck, and De Vrij executed a near-perfect defensive game, frustrating Arsenal’s frontline and leaving Sommer with little to do.

While Inter did not add significantly to their xG in the second half, they kept Arsenal at bay and maintained their composure even under pressure.

Inter’s manager, Simone Inzaghi, also displayed tactical flexibility, making timely substitutions to bolster his side’s defense, with Federico Dimarco coming on for forward Mehdi Taremi to consolidate their defensive line.

Arsenal’s Drop to 12th in the Champions League Standings

This defeat is a significant blow for the gunners, who now sit in 12th place, outside the top slots for automatic Last 16 qualification. With two wins from their first three matches, Arsenal had been in a promising position.

However, this loss, combined with their inability to capitalize on scoring opportunities, puts their Champions League campaign in jeopardy. They’ll need to find more clinical finishing and capitalize on scoring chances in their upcoming matches.
