Atalanta Demolish Juventus 4-0 to Stay Three Points Off Top

Atalanta are now three points adrift of Serie A leaders Inter after putting four goals past a toothless Juventus side on Sunday.

Atalanta delivered a statement performance at the Allianz Stadium, crushing Juventus 4-0 to hand the Bianconeri their first home defeat of the Serie A season. The dominant victory keeps Gasperini’s side firmly in the title race, just three points behind league leaders Inter Milan, while Juventus slip further in their bid to regain momentum.

Fast-Paced Start Sets the Tone

From the opening whistle, both teams displayed attacking intent. Atalanta wasted no time asserting themselves, with Ademola Lookman leading a blistering counterattack. His initial shot was blocked by Khéphren Thuram, who then found himself at the other end attempting a long-range effort that flew over the bar.

Atalanta’s early dominance continued as Davide Zappacosta and Lloyd Kelly both tested Juventus’ defense with efforts that narrowly missed the target. The visitors looked sharp and well-drilled, with Isak Hien attempting an acrobatic volley from a corner, though it failed to trouble Juventus goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio.

Juventus had their own moments, as Timothy Weah forced Gasperini’s side backline into action with a couple of shots that were well blocked by Zappacosta. However, the Bianconeri struggled to break through a disciplined Atalanta side.

Atalanta Take the Lead with Retegui’s Penalty

The breakthrough came in the 35th minute when Weston McKennie was penalized for handling a header from Berat Djimsiti inside the box. Atalanta’s leading scorer, Mateo Retegui, stepped up and coolly slotted his penalty into the bottom corner, just past Di Gregorio’s outstretched hand.

With a deserved lead, Gian Piero Gasperini’s men tightened their grip on the game. They nearly doubled their advantage before halftime, as Marten de Roon curled a shot wide, and Lookman saw an effort deflected onto the post. Di Gregorio pulled off a couple of key saves, including a brilliant stop to deny Zappacosta, ensuring Juventus stayed within reach.

De Roon Strikes Just After the Restart

Atalanta wasted no time after the break, scoring within the first minute of the second half. Lookman’s shot was saved by Di Gregorio, and Kelly’s rebound attempt was blocked, but the ball fell kindly for Marten de Roon, who calmly slotted it into the net to make it 2-0.

Juventus, now trailing by two goals, desperately searched for a response. McKennie had a chance to pull one back, but his shot flew wide. Sensing the urgency, Juventus manager Thiago Motta made three substitutions in the 54th minute, having already adjusted his lineup at halftime.

Despite the changes, Juventus failed to find a rhythm. Atalanta continued to control possession and dictate the tempo, frustrating the home side.

Kolasinac and Zappacosta Combine for the Third

The match was effectively put beyond doubt in the 66th minute when Gasperini’s side added a third goal. Sead Kolasinac and Zappacosta combined brilliantly, with Kolasinac’s clever backheel setting up Zappacosta for a calm and clinical finish. The Juventus defense, already stretched, was left helpless as the ball hit the back of the net.

With a three-goal cushion, Atalanta played with even greater confidence, moving the ball with precision and forcing Juventus into errors.

Lookman Piles on the Misery for Juventus

Juventus’ evening went from bad to worse in the 75th minute when a costly slip from substitute Dusan Vlahovic gifted the ball to Lookman. The Nigerian forward took full advantage, charging towards goal and unleashing a powerful strike past Di Gregorio to make it 4-0.

The final minutes of the game saw Atalanta comfortably see out their victory, denying Juventus any meaningful opportunities. The Bianconeri, visibly frustrated, were unable to mount any sort of comeback against a well-organized Atalanta side.

Atalanta’s Title Hopes Remain Alive

The emphatic win keeps Gasperini’s side within striking distance of Inter Milan at the top of the table, just three points behind the leaders. Gasperini’s side extended their unbeaten streak to seven Serie A matches, demonstrating that they are legitimate contenders for the title.

Meanwhile, Juventus find themselves six points behind Atalanta in fourth place, having now suffered three defeats in their last five matches across all competitions. The loss serves as a major blow to their ambitions, particularly as this was their first home defeat in Serie A this season.

Atalanta’s performance at the Allianz Stadium was nothing short of dominant. With confidence soaring and the squad firing on all cylinders, they have positioned themselves as serious challengers in the race for the Scudetto.
