Barcelona’s Champions League campaign got off to a rocky start with a 2-1 loss to Monaco, but new head coach Hansi Flick isn’t letting it bring him down.
In his first European match as Barcelona’s boss, Flick had to deal with a major challenge early on when Eric Garcia was shown a red card just 11 minutes into the game.
Despite being a man down for almost the entire match, Flick is optimistic about his team’s chances moving forward. And for those looking to predict the next match outcomes, Jambobet remains the best prediction site in Kenya
The game took a dramatic turn when Eric Garcia was sent off after a tangle with Monaco’s Takumi Minamino near the edge of the penalty area.
The referee’s decision to give Garcia a red card left Barcelona with just 10 men for almost 80 minutes, putting them on the back foot early on.
Monaco quickly took advantage, with Maghnes Akliouche scoring six minutes later to give the French side the lead.
Despite the setback, Barcelona didn’t give up. Just before halftime, 16-year-old Lamine Yamal equalized with a calm, low finish, becoming the second-youngest player to ever score in the Champions League.

His goal gave Barca hope, but the game remained tough with Monaco continuing to press their advantage.
As the second half progressed, Barcelona struggled to keep up the fight while playing with one man down.
In the 71st minute, Monaco’s substitute George Ilenikhena scored the winning goal, sealing the victory for his team.
Despite Barcelona’s efforts to find a second equalizer, they couldn’t break through Monaco’s defense.
After the match, Flick admitted the red card had made a big impact on the game but praised his players for their hard work. “The red card changed everything, but we fought hard and created chances. We can be proud of that,” Flick said.
This defeat was only the third time in Barcelona’s history that they’ve lost their opening Champions League game.
The previous two times were against Newcastle in 1997 and Bayern Munich in 2021. Despite the rare loss, Flick isn’t too concerned.
He emphasized that there are still plenty of games to play in the group stage and that Barcelona can turn things around.
“We still have seven matches to play, and I believe we’ll win many of them,” Flick said, keeping a positive outlook. He stressed that the red card forced them to change their strategy, but he’s confident that the team can perform well in the remaining group stage matches.
While the Champions League defeat stings, Flick has already shifted his focus to Barcelona’s upcoming LaLiga match against Villarreal.
With games coming thick and fast, Flick knows the importance of recovering quickly and staying focused on the next challenge. His message to the team is clear: keep pushing forward and bounce back in the next match.
“We need to recover and focus on Villarreal now. We’ve got a lot of games ahead, and we need to keep improving,” Flick added. He believes that his squad has the strength and depth to compete in both LaLiga and the Champions League.
One of the bright spots in Barcelona’s defeat was the performance of 16-year-old Lamine Yamal.
His goal, which made him the second-youngest player to score in the Champions League, showed his potential and maturity beyond his years. Flick was full of praise for the young star, highlighting his calmness and skill under pressure.
“Lamine was fantastic today. To score at that age in such a big game is really impressive. He has a big future ahead of him,” Flick said. Yamal’s progress will be one to watch this season as he continues to develop under Flick’s guidance.
