CBE Edges Police Bullets to Secure First-Ever CAF Women’s Champions League Spot

The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) made history by clinching their first-ever qualification for the CAF Women’s Champions League after a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Kenya Police Bullets in the CECAFA Zonal qualifiers final. This momentous win not only marks a new chapter for CBE but also serves as a redemption story after enduring consecutive final losses in the past two years.

A Tense First Half: Both Teams Struggle to Break Through

The final match at the CECAFA Zonal qualifiers was a tense affair from the outset, with both CBE and Police Bullets showing determination and grit on the pitch. The first half was characterized by a series of close calls and missed opportunities as both teams struggled to find the back of the net.

Police Bullets, known for their aggressive playing style, came close to taking the lead early in the match. In the 18th minute, Puren Alukwe’s powerful shot narrowly missed the target, sending a wave of relief through the CBE camp. “We knew it would be a tough match, and we had to stay focused and resilient,” said CBE’s head coach, Meseret Mamo, reflecting on the first half.

CBE, on the other hand, responded with several promising attacks, but their efforts were thwarted by the solid defensive work of Police Bullets. The Ethiopian side displayed great composure under pressure, maintaining possession and patiently waiting for an opportunity to break the deadlock.

Second Half Dominance: CBE’s Persistence Pays Off

The second half saw a more determined CBE side take control of the game. With the pressure mounting, CBE began to dominate possession, creating numerous scoring opportunities. Their persistence and tactical adjustments during halftime were evident as they relentlessly pushed forward in search of a goal.

The breakthrough finally came in the 82nd minute, when Senaf Wakuma, one of CBE’s standout players, found the back of the net with a clinical finish. The goal came after a beautifully executed defense-splitting pass from Senayit Bogale, which left the Police Bullets’ defense exposed. Wakuma calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper, sending the CBE fans into a frenzy.

Reflecting on the decisive moment, Wakuma said, “I knew this was our chance. When the ball came to me, I just focused on getting it right. It’s a moment I will never forget, and I’m so proud to have contributed to this historic win.”

A Solid Defensive Display: CBE Holds On for Victory

After taking the lead, CBE’s focus shifted to defense, as they sought to protect their narrow advantage. The Ethiopian side showcased a solid defensive display, with their backline standing firm against a series of late attacks from Police Bullets. The entire team worked cohesively, cutting off passing lanes and making crucial interceptions to deny their opponents any clear chances.

CBE goalkeeper Meseret Debebe was particularly instrumental in maintaining the clean sheet, making several key saves in the dying minutes of the match. “Our defense was incredible today,” Debebe said. “We knew we had to stay strong until the final whistle, and I’m just so happy we did it.”
