Emery Says Villa Still Alive in Champions League Despite 3-1 Defeat in Paris

Aston Villa’s manager Unai Emery remains optimistic despite his team’s 3-1 defeat at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday. Despite the setback, Emery expressed strong belief that Villa can still overturn the deficit in the return leg at Villa Park next week. The match, which was packed with exciting moments and impressive goals, leaves the English side with a lot of work to do to keep their European dreams alive.

Villa’s Positive Start

Aston Villa made an early breakthrough in Paris when Morgan Rogers scored the opening goal. The strike came as a surprise, as Villa managed to get the better of PSG’s defense in the first half. Rogers’ well-timed finish in the 26th minute gave Villa the advantage and raised hopes that the underdogs could continue their impressive run in the competition. However, the joy was short-lived, as PSG responded with two stunning goals in quick succession after the break.

PSG’s Quick Response:

PSG turned the game on its head with a brilliant equalizer from Desire Doue. The French midfielder’s strike was a remarkable one, showcasing his skill and vision to beat Villa’s goalkeeper, Emiliano Martinez. Just moments after, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia followed up with another sensational effort to give PSG the lead. The combination of PSG’s individual brilliance and clinical finishing left Villa with a challenging task ahead of the second leg.

Late Stoppage-Time Goal Adds to Villa’s Challenge

The final blow came in stoppage time when Nuno Mendes added a third goal for PSG. The Portuguese defender, after a well-executed pass from Ousmane Dembele, calmly rounded Martinez to slot the ball into the net. The goal put PSG in a commanding position with a 3-1 advantage going into the return leg at Villa Park. Despite this late setback, Unai Emery remained determined and focused on finding a way to come back in the second leg.

Emery’s Optimism and Confidence

Despite the loss, Unai Emery maintained that they still had a chance to turn the tie around. In his post-match comments, Emery stressed that Villa’s performance, particularly in the first half, was positive, and he was proud of his team’s effort. The coach pointed out that Villa Park would provide a supportive and passionate environment, which could give his side the boost they need to get a result in the second leg.

“At 2-1, we were thinking about playing to win in the next match, and at 3-1 it is still the same,” Emery said. “We are here and enjoying it, and I am very proud of the players. We competed fantastically, and we were close to getting a good result. At the end, with this goal, it is still more or less the same. Villa Park is our home, and hopefully, there we will be stronger.”

PSG’s Dominance and Luis Enrique’s Praise

PSG manager Luis Enrique, on the other hand, was pleased with his team’s performance and praised the quality of the goals scored. He noted that the game had everything – including the surprise early goal from Villa – but PSG had control for the majority of the match. “The quality of the goals was exceptional,” Luis Enrique said, highlighting Desire Doue’s equalizer and Kvaratskhelia’s individual brilliance as key moments. He also pointed out that the third goal, scored in stoppage time by Mendes, was the perfect finishing touch to a great team performance.

Enrique also made it clear that PSG would not take their foot off the gas in the second leg. “Our objective in Birmingham is clear, to try to win the game. We don’t know how to speculate, or to sit back and defend deep,” said the PSG coach, emphasizing that his team would remain attacking-focused in the return leg.

Villa’s Task for the Second Leg

For Emery’s men, the task ahead is daunting but not impossible. The team will need a special performance in front of their home crowd at Villa Park. With the stakes higher than ever, Villa must win by at least two goals to force extra time or three to secure a spot in the Champions League semi-finals outright. Emery’s tactical approach, along with the individual talent in the squad, will be put to the test in what promises to be an intense second-leg encounter.

PSG’s Key Return

One significant development for PSG is the return of captain Marquinhos. The Brazilian center-back, who missed the first leg due to suspension, will be available to help strengthen PSG’s defense. His presence is expected to add stability to the backline, especially as Villa seeks to capitalize on any defensive weaknesses.

The Road Ahead for Both Teams

PSG will have a weekend off as their Ligue 1 match against Nantes was postponed, giving them extra time to prepare for the second leg. On the other hand,  Villains must focus on their upcoming Premier League match against Southampton this Saturday. Emery will be hoping to manage his squad well to keep them fresh for the crucial Champions League tie next week.

As the teams prepare for the second leg, all eyes will be on Villa Park, where Villains will need a stellar performance to defy the odds and make history in European football. Will they be able to produce a dramatic comeback, or will PSG’s experience and quality shine through? The answer will be revealed next week, as the Champions League quarter-final tie continues to captivate fans worldwide.
