Firat Optimistic Despite Injury Woes as Harambee Stars Gear Up for AFCON Qualifiers with Renewed Determination

As the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers loom, Kenya’s Harambee Stars find themselves battling more than just the competition. A growing list of injuries to key players threatens to hamper their preparations, yet head coach Engin Firat remains optimistic. Despite the setbacks, the Turkish tactician is confident his team has the depth and determination to perform well as they kick off their campaign.

Kenya is set to face two critical encounters in the coming days. First, they will take on Zimbabwe’s Warriors at the Mandela National Stadium in Namboole, Uganda, on Friday, a match that promises to be a stern test of their resilience. Just four days later, they will travel to South Africa to lock horns with Namibia’s Brave Warriors, another daunting challenge for the injury-hit squad. For Firat, the path to success lies not just in individual brilliance but in the collective effort and unity of his team.

Overcoming Injuries with Team Spirit

The list of injured players heading into these matches reads like a who’s who of Kenyan football, with top names like Michael Olunga and Collins Sichenje ruled out. Olunga, the team’s captain and talisman, is a massive loss, given his goal-scoring prowess and leadership on the pitch. But Firat, ever the optimist, insists that the team can find solutions despite these challenges.

“We have several players out with injuries, including key figures like Olunga. It’s unfortunate, but we must find quick fixes and continue to work as a team,” Firat said during a recent interview. He emphasized that while Kenya’s opponents, Zimbabwe and Namibia, may have more individually skilled players, teamwork will be the Stars’ greatest asset.

“Even if our rivals have superior individual talent, we must rely on our team spirit and work together to achieve positive results. That’s how we’ll overcome these challenges,” Firat added.

Lack of Depth a Persistent Problem

One of the key issues that Firat has consistently highlighted is the lack of depth in Kenyan football. With a limited pool of players capable of competing at the international level, assembling a full squad during critical moments has often been a struggle.

“Kenya doesn’t have enough players who are ready to compete on the international stage,” Firat admitted. “This has always been a challenge, and it becomes more evident when we face tough opponents in important matches.”

Firat’s concerns are not new, but they have become particularly pressing ahead of the AFCON qualifiers. Injuries have reduced the options available to him, forcing the coach to consider younger and less experienced players for key roles. While this could be an opportunity for emerging talents to shine, it also poses a significant risk in such high-stakes matches.

Insufficient Preparation Time

Another issue compounding Kenya’s AFCON preparations is the limited time Firat has had to work with his squad. The Kenyan Premier League kicked off on August 24 but was halted after the first round of fixtures to accommodate the Fifa international break. This left many players without the competitive match practice they need to be fully prepared for international duty.

“It’s difficult to gauge how well-prepared the players are, both physically and mentally, given the short duration of our league and the level of competition we’re about to face,” Firat said. “We needed more time to work on our system, our tempo, and the physical conditioning of the players. Unfortunately, this is the reality of Kenyan football, and we must adjust.”

Firat’s frustration is palpable, but he remains pragmatic about the situation. The coach is keen to maximize whatever time he has left with the squad before the first whistle blows in Namboole on Friday. “We have to make the most of the time we’ve been given, and the players know what’s at stake,” he noted.

A Glimmer of Hope

Despite the challenges, there are reasons for cautious optimism. Firat is known for his tactical acumen, and under his guidance, Harambee Stars have shown flashes of brilliance in past matches. The coach’s ability to adapt his tactics based on the available players could be key to Kenya’s chances in these crucial AFCON qualifiers.

“We need to play smart and use the strengths we have. Even with injuries, we have talented players who can step up and make a difference,” Firat said. “The most important thing is that we stay united, play as a team, and give it our all.”

The upcoming matches against Zimbabwe and Namibia will be a test of both the team’s physical and mental fortitude. As Firat and his charges prepare to take on the Warriors and the Brave Warriors, Kenyan fans will be hoping for a resilient display that could pave the way to AFCON qualification.

For Firat and his team, it’s clear: the path to success may be steep, but with teamwork, determination, and a bit of tactical brilliance, the Harambee Stars still have a fighting chance.
