FKF President Nick Mwendwa Clarifies Junior Starlets’ U-17 World Cup Participation Amid KCSE Exam Clash

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Nick Mwendwa has provided much-needed clarity on the Junior Starlets’ participation in the upcoming U-17 Women’s World Cup, which coincides with their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams. The tournament is set to take place in the Dominican Republic from October 16 to November 3, overlapping with the KCSE exams scheduled from October 23 to November 24, 2024.

A Significant Scheduling Conflict

The overlap between the U-17 Women’s World Cup and the KCSE exams presents a significant dilemma for the players, who are currently in their final year of secondary school. These young athletes are now faced with the tough decision of balancing their academic commitments with the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to compete on the global stage.

Discussions with the Ministry of Education

Earlier reports from Pulse Sports revealed that the FKF had engaged in discussions with the Ministry of Education to explore the possibility of special exams for the players. This would allow them to participate in the World Cup without compromising their academic responsibilities. Providing an update on the situation, Mwendwa assured that the federation is committed to supporting the girls’ aspirations.

Players’ Commitment to the Tournament

“I want to assure you here that every girl that was part of that team that qualified for the World Cup wants to participate in the tournament,” Mwendwa stated on Friday after the FKF awards gala. “In fact, some of them have told me that they are more than happy to repeat next year; that is how serious it is.”

Ministry’s Stance on Exam Timing

Mwendwa explained that they had requested the Ministry of Education to consider special exams for the players. However, the ministry maintained that exams must be taken simultaneously by all students to ensure fairness and integrity. Despite this, the girls have expressed a willingness to repeat their final year to seize this unique opportunity to compete in the World Cup.

A Tough Choice

“We are faced with this choice, whether to tell them they have no chance of participating in the tournament, or do their exams next year,” Mwendwa continued. “I think the issue is solved. They will be coming to camp on August 18. They will train here before going to Spain for the Four Nations tournament, and from there, fly out to the Dominican Republic for the World Cup.”

Player’s Perspective

Marion Serenge, who received the Sports Personality for the month of June award from the Sports Journalists Association of Kenya (SJAK) last year, had already indicated her readiness to repeat form four if it meant she could participate in the tournament. This sentiment is shared by many players in the squad, who are eager to make the most of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The Road Ahead

The decision to prioritize the World Cup over immediate academic commitments highlights the players’ dedication and passion for football. This determination is expected to pay off, both in terms of personal development and national pride. The Junior Starlets are set to come into camp on August 18, where they will undergo rigorous training before heading to Spain for the Four Nations tournament. This preparation will be crucial as they gear up for the World Cup in the Dominican Republic.

Conclusion

The situation surrounding the Junior Starlets’ participation in the U-17 Women’s World Cup amidst their KCSE exams underscores the challenges faced by young athletes balancing sports and education. The commitment shown by the players and the support from the FKF and their families reflect the significance of this opportunity. With a robust training schedule and a supportive framework, the Junior Starlets are poised to make a significant impact at the World Cup, showcasing their talent and resilience on the global stage. Their journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes facing similar dilemmas, emphasizing the importance of pursuing one’s passion while striving for academic excellence.
