Frustrated Gitego Seeks Exit from AFC Leopards

Rwandan striker Arthur Gitego has expressed his desire to leave Kenyan Premier League giants AFC Leopards, citing a strained relationship with the club. Gitego’s turbulent stint at Ingwe has been marred by disciplinary concerns, off-field controversies, and limited playing opportunities, leaving the striker frustrated and eager for a fresh start.

Despite his intentions, Gitego’s departure appears unlikely due to contractual obligations and the club’s reluctance to grant his release. With a year remaining on his deal, AFC Leopards are determined to hold onto their player, complicating any potential transfer.

A Frustrating Season for Gitego

Gitego’s tenure at AFC Leopards has been challenging, particularly in the 2024 season, where he scored just one league goal. Once a promising addition to the squad, he has fallen behind Sydney Lokale in the pecking order and has seen his playing time diminish significantly.

The striker’s struggles have been exacerbated by off-field issues, including an arrest late in the year, which led to his brief detention. While the incident remains a sensitive topic, it reportedly played a role in former coach Tomas Trucha requesting Gitego’s release from the squad.

Desire to Leave and Contractual Hurdles

Since November, Gitego has been pushing for a transfer, hoping to reignite his career elsewhere. Speaking to Rwandan publication Times Sport, the striker revealed his frustrations with the situation at AFC Leopards.

“I asked them [to release me], but they refused,” Gitego said. He acknowledged that several clubs have shown interest in acquiring his services but highlighted that his current contract has made negotiations difficult.

“I had many offers, but they didn’t understand. They continue to play little tricks. I think I have no choice but to stay,” he added, suggesting that AFC Leopards have been uncooperative in facilitating his exit.

Attempts for Separation Stalled

Gitego disclosed that he has formally requested a separation from the club multiple times but has yet to receive a response. This lack of communication has left the striker resigned to the possibility of fulfilling the remainder of his contract, which runs until February 2026.

“I have written to them asking for a separation, but they have not responded, which means I have to sit down and finish my contract with the club,” he explained.

While AFC Leopards’ silence on the matter has left Gitego frustrated, it underscores the club’s unwillingness to part ways with the player without significant compensation or contractual resolution.

Early Promise and Decline

Gitego joined AFC Leopards in February 2024 on a two-year deal from Rwanda’s Marines FC. He made an immediate impact, finishing as the top scorer in the 2024 Mozzart Cup with five goals, a performance that highlighted his potential to become a key player for the team.

However, his form and fortunes took a downturn, and disciplinary concerns began to overshadow his performances. Once seen as a promising attacking option, Gitego has struggled to adapt and reclaim his place in the squad.

A Look at Gitego’s Career

Before joining AFC Leopards, Gitego had an impressive career in Rwanda, playing for clubs such as Heroes FC, Kiyovu Sports, and Gicumbi FC. His most notable stint came with Marines FC, where he scored 16 goals over a one-and-a-half-year spell. His performances in Rwanda earned him a move to Kenya, where he hoped to elevate his career by playing for one of the region’s most prominent clubs.

Gitego’s struggles at AFC Leopards contrast sharply with the promise he showed during his early days at the club and his success in Rwanda. His situation reflects the challenges players face when adapting to new leagues and environments, particularly when external factors, such as disciplinary issues, come into play.

Interest from Other Clubs

Despite his current predicament, Gitego remains a sought-after player. Several clubs have reportedly expressed interest in signing him, recognizing his talent and potential. However, AFC Leopards’ firm stance on retaining the striker has made a move unlikely in the short term.

The Rwandan forward’s market value could provide AFC Leopards with an opportunity to negotiate a lucrative deal if they decide to offload him. For now, though, the club appears determined to hold onto their player, perhaps hoping for a resurgence in form or a resolution to the ongoing tensions.

What’s Next for Gitego and AFC Leopards?

The coming months will be crucial for Gitego and AFC Leopards. If the club continues to resist his exit, Gitego may have no choice but to honor the remainder of his contract. This scenario could lead to further tensions unless both parties find a way to mend their fractured relationship.

For AFC Leopards, resolving the situation amicably would not only preserve the club’s reputation but also allow them to focus on their on-field objectives. Whether that resolution involves keeping Gitego or facilitating his transfer remains to be seen.

Gitego’s case also highlights broader issues within football regarding player management, contractual disputes, and the balance between club and player interests. For the Rwandan striker, a fresh start elsewhere could provide the opportunity he needs to rebuild his career and rediscover his form.
