In a remarkable display of skill, determination, and resilience, Highway Secondary School and Butere Girls High School were crowned the 2024 KSSSA National football champions, marking a memorable day in Kenyan school sports. Both teams demonstrated why they are the best in the nation, overcoming formidable opponents and challenges to secure their titles and earn the right to represent Kenya in the upcoming East Africa games.
Highway Secondary School’s path to victory in the boys’ category was anything but straightforward. The final match against Musingu School was a tense affair, showcasing the competitive spirit of both teams. Musingu took an early lead in the 14th minute when Elvis Ochieng capitalized on a rare error from Highway’s goalkeeper, Boaz Mushiri. The early goal put pressure on Highway, but rather than buckle under the weight of the occasion, they rose to the challenge.
Led by their talismanic duo, Humphrey Aroko and Alvin Oloo, Highway began to assert themselves in the match. Their efforts paid off in the 32nd minute when Aroko, showing exceptional vision and composure, played a precise pass to Oloo, who unleashed a powerful 20-yard strike that flew past Musingu’s goalkeeper, Arnold Chivachi. The equalizer energized Highway, setting the stage for a thrilling encounter.
The second half was a battle of wills, with both teams creating chances but unable to find the back of the net. The tension reached its peak in added time when Highway’s captain, Osotsi, was shown a red card for a dangerous tackle on Musingu’s Kevin Manani. Despite being reduced to ten men, Highway’s defense, marshaled by their remaining leaders on the field, held firm, ensuring the match ended 1-1 after regular time.
Extra time provided more drama, with both teams pushing for a winner, but the match remained deadlocked, leading to the dreaded penalty shootout. In the shootout, Musingu’s first penalty taker, Manani, saw his effort crash against the crossbar, while Mushiri, the hero of the day, saved two crucial penalties. For Highway, Aroko, Luis Ochieng, and Tyronne Ochieng all converted their spot-kicks, sealing a 3-2 victory and sparking wild celebrations among the players and their supporters.
On the other side, Butere Girls High School proved their dominance in the girls’ category by retaining their title with a 2-0 victory over Nyakach Girls. The final, which kicked off at 9:30 AM, saw Butere take control early on, with Lorna Faith opening the scoring in the 18th minute. The early goal set the tone for the match, with Butere dictating the pace and controlling possession. Mercy Sakwa doubled their lead, ensuring that Butere would once again be crowned champions.
Butere’s journey to the final was not without its challenges, having lost to Nyakach during the preliminary rounds. However, in the final, they were determined to avenge that defeat, and their superior tactics and teamwork saw them through. Coach Howard Shikanga praised his team’s resilience and focus, stating that their victory was well-deserved and a testament to their hard work and determination.
As the dust settles on the 2024 KSSSA National football championships, both Highway and Butere now shift their focus to the East Africa games in Uganda. Representing Kenya on such a stage is a significant honor, and both teams will be eager to prove themselves against the best from the region. Joining Highway and Butere in Uganda will be Musingu School, who despite their loss in the final, have earned a spot in the East Africa games, and St Joseph Boys Kitale, who secured their place by thrashing Kirangari 6-0 in the third-place playoff. In the girls’ category, St Joseph Girls Kitale will join Butere in representing Kenya after defeating Kombani 1-0 to finish third.
These victories highlight the strength and depth of Kenyan school football, with each of these teams showcasing the talent and potential that exists within the country. As they prepare for the East Africa games, they carry the hopes of a nation, and there is no doubt that they will give their all to bring further glory to Kenya.
