Hussein Mohammed breaks silence on why League winners are yet to be rewarded

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed has opened up on the federation’s financial struggles, explaining why the 2024/25 FKF Premier League winners and Women’s Premier League champions are yet to receive any cash prizes.

Despite enjoying broadcast partnership support from Azam TV, FKF is grappling with what Hussein describes as a “dire financial situation,” which has made it impossible to confirm whether cash rewards for league winners will be issued.

Speaking during an interview with Citizen TV, Hussein, who took office in December 2024, revealed that the federation inherited a massive debt burden. This, he says, has crippled FKF’s operations and forced them into survival mode.

“I’m not making excuses, but I found this league halfway through. We’re still struggling with our debt portfolio and are just trying to stay afloat,” Hussein explained candidly.

Kenya Police FC and Kenya Police Bullets Await Their Rewards

Kenya Police FC, who lifted the 2024/25 FKF Premier League title, and Kenya Police Bullets FC, the Women’s Premier League champions, remain in limbo as prize money for their historic achievements hangs in the balance.

Both teams were expecting financial incentives after their impressive seasons, but Hussein’s revelation now casts doubt on whether they will receive any rewards at all.

While admitting to the federation’s current financial struggles, Hussein assured the football fraternity that his administration is committed to changing the status quo. He called for patience and understanding, asking stakeholders to judge his leadership starting from the upcoming 2025/26 season — the first full campaign under his stewardship.

“Please judge me from the next season. We are committed to doing whatever we can to remunerate, compensate, and motivate the teams by offering good cash prizes,” he said.

Vision of Bigger Prize Money

Hussein also shared an ambitious vision for the future of Kenyan football. He expressed his desire to transform the FKF Premier League into a competitive and marketable product, one that could attract lucrative sponsorship deals and significant prize money.

“I want the Kenyan Premier League to attract prize monies of Ksh 30 million, 40 million, or even 50 million per season. It is possible, but it requires the league to be competitive, visible, and commercially viable,” Hussein stated.

His remarks come at a time when questions are mounting over the federation’s ability to attract corporate partners and inject life into Kenya’s top-tier football league.

Hussein emphasized that attracting financial support and increasing prize money will depend on improving the league’s overall appeal. He challenged stakeholders, including clubs and fans, to work together to elevate the profile of the league, making it attractive to potential investors and sponsors.

“How do you attract resources? There has to be a product that is sellable — something corporates are willing to invest in and Kenyans are proud to support,” he added.

The Countdown to the 2025/26 FKF Premier League

The 2025/26 FKF Premier League season is scheduled to kick off towards the end of September, with expectations high for a refreshed and more commercially driven competition.

Hussein’s commitment to addressing the prize money issue will likely be a major talking point as the new season approaches. Clubs, players, and fans alike will be watching keenly to see whether the federation delivers on its promise of better rewards and a more competitive league structure.

As the FKF boss sets his sights on restructuring the league’s business model, the future of Kenyan football now rests on the federation’s ability to bridge its financial gaps and restore confidence among its key stakeholders.
