The Kenyan team will kick off their campaign against Uganda’s Bukedea Comprehensive School on Sunday, marking the beginning of a challenging journey in a highly competitive Pool ‘A’. This pool also features defending champions St Mary’s Kitende from Uganda, Kenya’s own champions Highway Secondary, and Tanzania’s Benjamin Mkapa Secondary.
Tough Pool Draw for St Joseph’s Boys Kitale
St Joseph’s Boys Kitale face a formidable challenge as they aim to bring home the coveted FEASSA football title. Drawn into Pool ‘A’, they are pitted against some of the strongest teams in the region. St Mary’s Kitende, with a record 14 regional championships, stands as the most formidable opponent in the group. Their dominance in the tournament’s history is well documented, and they will undoubtedly be the team to beat.
Kenya’s Highway Secondary, another title contender, adds to the group’s competitiveness. The team has been impressive on the national stage, with Most Valuable Player Humphrey Aroko leading their charge. However, Highway faces its own set of challenges, particularly the absence of their head coach, Beldine Odemba, who is currently with Kenya Police Bullets for the Cecafa Zonal qualifier for the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Despite these hurdles, St Joseph’s coach, Amos Juma, remains optimistic. He has been hard at work preparing his team, focusing on rectifying the mistakes that saw them finish third at the national level. “We want to bring the trophy home,” Juma said confidently. “I have rectified the mistakes we made at the nationals and done a lot of strength training because Ugandans are more physical.” Jobo will also be relying heavily on their star striker, Instil Simiyu, who was the top scorer at the national championship with eight goals. Simiyu’s goal-scoring prowess will be critical in navigating through this tough group.
Highway Secondary’s Bid for Regional Glory
Highway Secondary enters the tournament with high hopes, despite missing their head coach. The team will look to build on their strong national campaign, where they were led by the exceptional performances of Humphrey Aroko. The absence of Coach Beldine Odemba is undoubtedly a blow, but the team’s depth and experience could still see them through to the later stages of the tournament. In Group ‘B’, Kenyan champions Butere Girls face a daunting task against Uganda’s Amus College and Rines, as well as Tanzania’s Alliance and Tanzanite. Butere Girls’ coach, Tobias Ojenge, is determined to guide his team to victory. “Last year, we lost to Kawempe Muslim. However, I believe this time, we are better prepared and experienced. Our target is to lift the trophy,” Ojenge stated.
