Barcelona’s ongoing financial difficulties continue to cast a shadow over their squad management, as La Liga recently announced that the Catalan giants lack the financial capacity to register players Dani Olmo and Pau Victor. Despite attempts to reinforce their squad with fresh talent, Barcelona remains entangled in a complex web of financial fair play restrictions, leaving the futures of Olmo and Victor hanging by a thread.
Barcelona’s Financial Battle Amid Camp Nou Rebuild
The financial turmoil surrounding Barcelona is further exacerbated by the ongoing reconstruction of their iconic Camp Nou stadium, which is being rebuilt in preparation for the 2025/26 season. The ambitious project comes with hefty expenses, stretching the club’s finances thin and complicating their ability to comply with financial fair play (FFP) regulations.

In a bid to alleviate their financial woes, Barcelona announced a lucrative VIP box deal in January, reportedly worth €100 million (£83.5m). This agreement was intended to provide the necessary financial fair play room to officially register their new signings Dani Olmo and Pau Victor. However, despite their efforts, the club has been unable to resolve their financial struggles, leading to continued obstacles in player registration.
La Liga’s Official Statement
On Wednesday, La Liga released a statement confirming that Barcelona still lacks the financial capacity to officially register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor. The league’s findings were based on discrepancies in Barcelona’s financial statements, specifically concerning the VIP box deal.
According to La Liga, Barcelona employed an unnamed auditor between December 31st and January 3rd, who recorded the VIP box deal within the club’s books. However, Barcelona’s current auditor has since omitted the revenue from that deal in the interim financial statements for the first part of the 2024/25 season.
La Liga explained in their statement: “No amount from the (VIP box deal) is ultimately recorded in the profit and loss accounts, contrary to what had been certified by the club and the auditor at the time of said transaction.”
Moreover, the league reported the auditor Barcelona utilized during that period to Spain’s Accounting and Auditing Institute for further investigation. This move underscores the severity of Barcelona’s financial challenges and highlights the ongoing scrutiny the club faces from multiple entities.
BREAKING: La Liga say Barcelona’s new auditor did not rightly calculate the €100M from the sale of the VIP seats.

Financial Fair Play Restrictions Continue to Bite
The crux of Barcelona’s current predicament lies in their inability to meet financial fair play requirements. According to La Liga, the club did not possess the necessary financial capacity to register Dani Olmo and Pau Victor on December 31, 2024, January 3, 2025, or at any point thereafter.
Barcelona’s inability to comply with FFP rules is particularly concerning given the club’s storied history and their efforts to rebuild a competitive squad. The lack of financial leeway also places added pressure on club officials to find innovative solutions to their monetary struggles, which could involve player sales or restructuring existing contracts.
Missed Deadlines and CSD’s Temporary Solution
The financial struggles have also led to administrative complications, with Barcelona missing the registration deadline for Dani Olmo and Pau Victor at the end of December 2024. At that point, the players’ temporary licenses expired, which had been granted following their signings last summer.
In response to Barcelona’s failure to meet the deadline, La Liga and the Spanish football federation (RFEF) declined to renew the players’ registrations. However, Spain’s sports council (CSD) intervened on January 8, granting Barcelona precautionary permission to use Dani Olmo and Pau Victor until a final ruling is made.
The CSD’s decision serves as a temporary reprieve for Barcelona, allowing them to field the players until a conclusive judgment is issued. The sports council is expected to deliver their definitive ruling on the matter on or before April 7, a deadline that could prove pivotal for Barcelona’s plans moving forward.
Players’ Performances Amid Financial Chaos
Despite the uncertainty surrounding their registrations, both Dani Olmo and Pau Victor have managed to contribute to Barcelona’s campaign. Olmo, although currently sidelined with an injury, has made 13 appearances, scoring two goals and providing four assists. Pau Victor, meanwhile, has been limited to substitute appearances but remains eager to make a more significant impact.
The ongoing financial struggles have undoubtedly added pressure to Barcelona’s sporting ambitions. With La Liga and other governing bodies closely monitoring their financial activities, the club faces an uphill battle to secure the necessary approvals to officially register Olmo and Victor.
Looking Ahead – A Race Against Time
As the April 7 deadline approaches, Barcelona finds itself in a race against time. The outcome of the CSD’s ruling could have significant implications for the club’s short-term plans and their ability to compete effectively on the pitch. With the reconstruction of Camp Nou demanding substantial financial resources, Barcelona must navigate these challenges with precision to avoid further complications.
The saga surrounding Dani Olmo and Pau Victor’s registrations serves as a stark reminder of the delicate financial balancing act Barcelona must perform. Whether they can overcome these obstacles and finally register their new signings remains to be seen. Until then, the club’s supporters can only watch and hope that their beloved team finds a way to navigate these turbulent financial waters.
