Luol Deng, an NBA star turned mentor and leader, has channeled his efforts into developing basketball in his homeland of South Sudan. As the president of the South Sudan Basketball Federation, Deng has played a pivotal role in transforming the nation’s basketball scene, guiding the “Bright Stars” to their first Olympic appearance in Paris.
Deng’s journey began as an iconic figure in Sudanese basketball, and later South Sudanese basketball following the country’s independence in 2011. His path was inspired by Manute Bol, the first southern Sudanese NBA player. Deng’s 15-year NBA career, particularly with the Chicago Bulls, earned him two All-Star selections and solidified his reputation.
Upon retiring in 2019, Deng initially intended to relax but soon found himself leading the South Sudanese team. His vision was clear: to make South Sudan a basketball powerhouse. “I believed that we had the talent, that we are one of the best teams in Africa,” Deng shared with olympics.com. He aimed for South Sudan to achieve dominance in basketball similar to Kenya and Ethiopia in athletics.
Deng, 39, has always been committed to his homeland, working with various organizations and his foundation. He actively promoted the 2011 referendum for South Sudan’s independence. Despite gaining independence, South Sudan has faced continuous challenges, including civil conflict, poverty, and climate crises.
Born in Wau, Deng fled the civil war with his family, eventually settling in Egypt where he discovered basketball through his brother. Deng later moved to Britain, where his father, Aldo Deng, was granted political asylum. His talent led him to the United States, first to Blair Academy, then to Duke University, and finally to the NBA.
At Blair Academy, Deng forged a close bond with Royal Ivey, who now coaches the South Sudanese team. Ivey praised Deng’s dedication to his country and his role in connecting South Sudanese talent with resources. “The talent is in South Sudan, but the resources aren’t there. Luol has been the figurehead to push that forward,” Ivey said.
Deng’s initiatives include building basketball infrastructure and assembling a competitive national team. His commitment is evident as he personally recruits players from around the world. Occasionally, he even coaches the national team, highlighting his hands-on approach.
“Luol is a symbol. Growing up, we all got to watch him in the NBA… We wanted to be like Luol,” said Wenyen Gabriel, reflecting on Deng’s influence. Gabriel emphasized Deng’s continued leadership, even off the court, in empowering young players.
Captain Kuany Kuany, with the team since January 2020, has seen Deng’s vision materialize. “One of his favourite quotes that he always says is ‘Build it and they will come’. That’s what’s happening now,” Kuany noted.
