Maresca Under Pressure as Chelsea’s Poor Form Continues
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has acknowledged the difficulties his team is facing as they endure a disappointing run of form. The Blues have won just three of their last 12 matches across all competitions, leaving them in seventh place in the Premier League standings. Once considered potential title contenders in December, Chelsea have failed to capitalize on favorable fixtures, raising concerns among fans and pundits alike.
With their latest setback coming in a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, Maresca has admitted that his squad is struggling in key areas of the pitch, both offensively and defensively.
Defensive Fragility and Missed Chances Hurting Chelsea
Chelsea’s inability to maintain leads has been a recurring issue in recent weeks. The Blues have dropped 13 points from winning positions since Boxing Day—more than any other team in the Premier League.
Maresca believes that the team’s biggest issues lie inside both penalty areas. Defensively, they have been vulnerable, while their attacking inefficiency has cost them crucial points.
“Probably there is always more than one reason,” Maresca said. “In the last seven, eight, ten games, the huge difference for me has been especially inside the box—both boxes. Apart from Brighton away in the Premier League, we always created chances, we almost always scored, but the difference has been inside the box. We need to be defensively stronger and more clinical when we get the chance.”
Despite Chelsea’s ability to create opportunities, their failure to convert those chances into goals has kept games open, allowing opponents to stage comebacks. The lack of defensive stability has further compounded their problems, as they continue to struggle with holding onto leads.

Chelsea’s Worrying Trend of Dropping Points
When presented with the statistic that Chelsea have dropped 13 points from winning positions since December, Maresca admitted he doesn’t have a definitive explanation for the trend.
“I don’t know [what that tells me],” Maresca said. “I don’t have an answer for that. I knew this, that we dropped 13 points from winning positions.”
He acknowledged that while Chelsea have often taken the lead in matches, their inability to maintain control and secure victories has been their downfall.
“Sometimes it’s football. Sometimes there is a reason why. We are trying to understand a little bit. The good thing is at least you were in front in these kinds of games, but now it is the other part—when you are in front, trying to protect that lead.”
Maresca pointed out that Chelsea have frequently had opportunities to extend their advantage but have failed to capitalize. Against Aston Villa, the Blues had multiple chances to go 2-0 up but failed to take them.
“In almost all these games, we analyze that we have chances to go from 1-0 to 2-0, from 0-1 to 0-2, and we miss more than once. Even the other day, against Villa, we had four or five chances for 0-2. If you miss, the game is always open, and anything can happen. For sure, it is something we need to understand.”
Cole Palmer’s Role and Chelsea’s Inconsistency
One of the standout players for Chelsea this season has been Cole Palmer, who has been a vital creative force. However, even his contributions haven’t been enough to steer the team to consistent victories. Palmer has played a key role in many of Chelsea’s attacking moves, but the team’s reliance on individual brilliance rather than collective fluidity has been a concern.
Maresca has acknowledged that Chelsea need to find a way to become more efficient in the final third while also addressing their defensive frailties. With Palmer’s ability to create chances, Chelsea should be scoring more goals, but their wastefulness in front of goal has proven costly.

Maresca’s Job Under Scrutiny
As Chelsea continue to struggle, questions about Maresca’s future at the club are beginning to surface. While he has been praised for trying to implement a more structured style of play, the results have not matched expectations. The pressure is mounting, with Chelsea needing to turn their form around quickly if they are to secure European football next season.
The club’s inconsistent performances and their failure to maintain leads are issues that Maresca must address if he hopes to retain the confidence of the board and supporters. With crucial fixtures ahead, Chelsea need to find a way to stop dropping points and rediscover their early-season form.
Looking Ahead: Can Chelsea Recover?
Chelsea’s struggles in both attack and defense have left them in a precarious position. With the Premier League season reaching its decisive phase, they must find a way to turn things around. The upcoming fixtures will be crucial in determining whether they can mount a challenge for the European spots or risk falling further behind their rivals.
Maresca’s honesty about the team’s shortcomings is a step in the right direction, but the real challenge lies in addressing these issues on the pitch. If Chelsea can become more clinical in front of goal and shore up their defense, they may still salvage their season. However, if their struggles continue, they risk finishing outside the European qualification spots, which would be a massive disappointment given their ambitions at the start of the campaign.
