President Kalekwa insists Matano exit will not derail Sofapaka’s good season

Sofapaka President Elly Kalekwa has downplayed the sudden exit of veteran coach Robert Matano (60) saying the club has seen many coaches who come and go in the past years and will never be affected because of his decision to leave the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League outfit.

Sofapaka FC president Elly Kalekwa has expressed unwavering confidence in the club’s ability to thrive despite the departure of head coach Robert Matano, who has joined Tanzanian side Fountain Gate FC. Matano, credited with transforming Sofapaka’s fortunes in the Kenyan Premier League, signed a short-term contract with Fountain Gate, currently sixth in the Tanzanian league and aiming for a top-four finish to secure continental football next season.

Matano’s Impact at Sofapaka

Robert Matano’s tenure at Sofapaka saw a remarkable turnaround for the club. After narrowly avoiding relegation last season, Matano built a competitive squad from relatively unknown players, steering the team to eighth place in the FKF Premier League with 21 points, just six behind league leaders KCB FC.

The coach’s tactical acumen and ability to identify talent earned him praise from fans and stakeholders alike. Under his leadership, Sofapaka not only stabilized but also began challenging higher up the table, setting a solid foundation for the club’s future.

Kalekwa’s Optimism and Leadership

While Matano’s departure could be seen as a blow to the 2009 FKF Premier League champions, Kalekwa remains optimistic. Speaking to Flashscore, the Sofapaka president downplayed concerns over the club’s future performance, emphasizing the team’s resilience in the face of previous coaching changes.

“Everyone is looking for better opportunities, and I have no issue with Matano leaving. There’s no need to worry about our future performances because he chose to go on his own,” Kalekwa said. “Many coaches have come and gone, and Matano’s departure isn’t the end of the world.”

Kalekwa highlighted Sofapaka’s history of overcoming managerial transitions, stating that the club has consistently maintained its competitive edge regardless of who has been at the helm.

Interim Coaching Appointment

Following Matano’s exit, Sofapaka has appointed assistant coach Ezekiel Akwana as interim head coach. Akwana, a seasoned football tactician, has been part of the team’s recent success and is expected to ensure continuity while the club seeks a permanent replacement.

Kalekwa expressed confidence in Akwana’s ability to guide the team, emphasizing that the squad remains determined to perform well. “We’ve had several coaches, including Matano himself, and even foreign coaches. Sofapaka didn’t collapse when they left, so why should we be concerned now? Nothing will change; we will keep pushing and aim for the best finish this season.”

Matano’s Professional Exit

Kalekwa praised him for his professionalism in handling his departure, noting that the coach personally informed him of his decision and sought a formal release. “When he came to my office to say he was leaving, I didn’t hesitate to grant him a release letter. I appreciate that he approached me personally, unlike some coaches who leave without informing the club,” Kalekwa explained.

This mutual respect reflects the positive relationship between the coach and the club, with Kalekwa expressing gratitude for Matano’s contributions and wishing him success in Tanzania. “He did his job and lifted us from a tough spot. I respect him a lot—he’s a great coach and a family friend,” Kalekwa added.

Sofapaka’s Vision Moving Forward

Despite the change in leadership, Kalekwa remains focused on the club’s goals for the season. He believes the team’s solid foundation, coupled with the determination of the players and technical staff, will ensure a strong finish in the league.

“I have a group of players determined to perform. We shouldn’t dwell on Matano’s departure. His legacy is intact, but our journey continues. We are confident of achieving our goals,” he said.

Kalekwa’s forward-looking approach underscores Sofapaka’s commitment to sustained success, leveraging the team’s current momentum to secure a strong position in the FKF Premier League.

Matano’s New Role at Fountain Gate FC

Matano’s move to Fountain Gate FC marks a new chapter in his coaching career. The Tanzanian club, currently seeking a top-four finish in the league, has entrusted Matano with the task of elevating their performance and qualifying for continental competitions. Given his track record at Sofapaka, Matano’s arrival is expected to have an immediate impact.

The coach’s departure from Sofapaka reflects the dynamic nature of football, where opportunities arise, and decisions are made for mutual benefit. Kalekwa’s acknowledgment of this reality exemplifies his pragmatic leadership style.
