The rivalry between McLaren and Red Bull is reaching boiling point after a controversial penalty handed to Lando Norris during the United States Grand Prix. As the battle for the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship heats up, McLaren’s frustration has grown after Norris was penalized for an off-track overtake on Max Verstappen, costing him a podium finish in Austin. The incident is just one in a series of flare-ups between the two teams, intensifying their rivalry and raising questions about how the sport’s regulations are being interpreted in high-stakes situations.
The Controversial Incident
The drama unfolded during the closing stages of the US Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas. Lando Norris, locked in a fierce battle with Max Verstappen for third place, made a bold move to overtake the Red Bull driver at Turn 12. Verstappen, holding the inside line, appeared to brake late, which McLaren believes was a deliberate tactic to push Norris wide and force him off track. Norris succeeded in passing Verstappen on the outside, but because both cars went off the track, the stewards intervened, handing Norris a five-second penalty for completing the maneuver outside the white line.
This penalty dropped Norris from third to fourth, a crucial blow in his title fight with Verstappen. With only five races remaining in the season, Norris now trails Verstappen by 57 points, a gap that will be difficult to close. McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, was quick to express his frustration, arguing that Verstappen had used the regulations to his advantage and that both cars had gained an equal benefit from going off track.
McLaren’s Response
McLaren has not held back in voicing their displeasure with the penalty decision. Team principal Andrea Stella publicly criticized the stewards’ ruling, stating that Verstappen’s defense was unfair. After reviewing footage of the incident multiple times, Stella explained, “The defending car goes straight at the apex, making it impossible for Lando to complete the move. Both drivers went off track, and yet the penalty was only applied to us. It’s frustrating because this isn’t the first time we’ve seen Max using such tactics to defend.”
Stella further argued that the penalty robbed McLaren of crucial points in the championship race, labeling the stewards’ decision as “unnecessary” and “hasty.” According to him, Verstappen’s maneuver took advantage of the regulations without giving Norris a fair opportunity to execute a clean overtake.
Verstappen’s Reaction
Max Verstappen, on the other hand, was unapologetic in his defense. The reigning world champion dismissed McLaren’s complaints, suggesting that they were simply feeling the pressure of the title fight. “They complain a lot lately,” Verstappen said after the race. “But the rules are very clear. If you go outside the white line, you cannot pass, and I’ve been penalized for that in the past as well.”
Verstappen went on to say that he followed the regulations, and that if Norris had stayed within the track limits, the outcome might have been different. “It’s part of racing,” he added. “Everyone is pushing hard, but the rules are there for a reason. They applied the same to me in the past, and they did so today.”
Verstappen’s dismissal of McLaren’s objections is just the latest in a growing series of heated exchanges between the two teams. Before the US GP, McLaren had already raised concerns about a device on the Red Bull that they believed could alter the car’s front bib under parc fermé conditions. Red Bull, in turn, had previously questioned McLaren’s use of a flexing rear wing earlier in the season.
A Broader Debate on Regulation Interpretation
The incident has sparked a wider conversation in the Formula 1 paddock about how regulations are applied during races. McLaren believes that the stewards’ decision was inconsistent with previous rulings, pointing out similar incidents where different outcomes were reached. In fact, earlier in the same race, Mercedes’ George Russell was penalized for a similar move on Valtteri Bottas at Turn 12, where he was deemed to have forced the Alfa Romeo driver off track. Meanwhile, Yuki Tsunoda also received a penalty for pushing Alex Albon wide.
However, McLaren feels there is a lack of consistency in the enforcement of track limits. For example, Verstappen’s aggressive dive up the inside of Turn 1 at the start of the race, which pushed Norris wide, went unpunished. Mercedes’ team principal Toto Wolff echoed these frustrations, calling the decisions “biased.”
This inconsistency has left drivers and teams questioning how track-limit violations are judged and whether the rules need to be clarified or more consistently enforced as the season enters its final stretch.

The Championship Picture
With five races remaining in the 2024 Formula 1 season, Max Verstappen’s lead over Lando Norris has now extended to 57 points. While the gap is substantial, Norris is not yet out of the title fight. McLaren will be pushing to close the points difference, but they will need near-flawless performances in the upcoming races, starting with the Mexican Grand Prix.
For Verstappen, the US GP penalty drama is unlikely to deter his focus. The Dutchman has been in commanding form throughout the season, and with a comfortable lead, he is well-positioned to clinch another world title.
