Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed that his team must shoulder the blame for their shock 2-0 defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday.
The Gunners suffered their first loss of the season after a series of costly errors on the pitch, including a red card for defender William Saliba, that left them unable to recover.
Arteta didn’t shy away from discussing the key moments that changed the game. Goals from Bournemouth’s Ryan Christie and Evanilson handed Arsenal a defeat that could have been avoided if not for critical mistakes on the pitch.
Arteta admitted that the team made two significant errors, ultimately costing them the match.
Costly Mistakes and a Red Card
The pivotal moment in the match came when Arsenal’s William Saliba was sent off for a professional foul in the first half.
The red card followed a misplaced pass by Leandro Trossard, which put Saliba under pressure to stop a Bournemouth attack.
The VAR review overturned the on-field referee’s initial yellow card decision, upgrading it to a red. This left Arsenal playing the majority of the match with ten men.
Arteta, while not overly harsh on Saliba, acknowledged the impact of the dismissal. “It’s a split-second decision you have to make. The striker is on his back, and obviously, he doesn’t expect the ball to suddenly come his way. He just made a decision, and that’s it,” said Arteta. The manager confirmed that the club would not appeal the decision, stating that “the decision is not going to change twice.”
Saliba’s red card left Arsenal vulnerable, and Bournemouth took full advantage of their numerical superiority. Arteta explained that playing for more than 65 minutes with ten men at such a high level made it “an impossible task” for the Gunners to salvage anything from the game.
Missed Opportunities Cost Arsenal
While the red card was a significant factor, Arteta also pointed to missed opportunities as a reason for Arsenal’s downfall. The Gunners had a chance to take control of the match, but a missed opportunity by Gabriel Martinelli proved costly.
The Brazilian forward found himself in a one-on-one situation with the Bournemouth goalkeeper but failed to convert the chance that could have put Arsenal ahead.
Arteta reflected on the moment, saying, “There is a big moment with 0-0 when we have a big opening, one against one with the ‘keeper. We don’t manage to score, and at the other end, we make another mistake. We have to fault ourselves.”
The manager emphasized that football is a game of errors and, on this occasion, Arsenal made two big ones that determined the outcome. “Football is a sport where errors are part of it. Tonight we made two big errors that cost us the game,” he said.

Bournemouth Capitalizes on Arsenal’s Mistakes
Bournemouth, on the other hand, capitalized on Arsenal’s misfortune. With Arsenal down to ten men, the Cherries pressed forward and found the back of the net twice. Ryan Christie opened the scoring for Bournemouth after Saliba’s red card, putting the hosts ahead and increasing the pressure on Arsenal.
Evanilson then doubled Bournemouth’s lead, sealing the win and leaving Arsenal with no way back into the game. The defeat marked Arsenal’s first loss of the season and came as a surprise to fans and pundits alike, given the Gunners’ strong start to the campaign.
While Arteta was clearly disappointed with the result, he remained measured in his criticism. He commended his team for their effort and commitment, even after going down to ten men. “I cannot fault the team for their effort, their commitment, and how intelligent they were to play the way we had to with ten men,” said Arteta.
However, he also stressed that playing for such a long period with a man down makes it extremely difficult to secure points. “Playing for 65 or 68 minutes with ten men at this level is just an impossible task. It’s an accident waiting to happen, not to get the points,” he said.
Arteta acknowledged the pain of the defeat but emphasized the importance of moving on quickly, with a crucial Champions League match against Shakhtar Donetsk looming on Tuesday. “We have to accept it, move on, and have that pain that we are feeling at the moment for Tuesday.”
Arsenal’s Strong Start Tested
Before the defeat to Bournemouth, Arsenal had enjoyed an unbeaten run in the Premier League, showcasing their title credentials. However, this result serves as a reminder that even top teams are susceptible to moments of misfortune and error.
Arteta will need to rally his squad ahead of the midweek clash against Shakhtar Donetsk, as they look to put the defeat behind them and get back to winning ways. With Arsenal competing on multiple fronts, including the Premier League and Champions League, the ability to bounce back from setbacks will be crucial for their success this season.
