Gor Mahia head coach Leonardo Neiva is preparing his team for what can only be described as a monumental challenge in the CAF Champions League. After a 3-0 defeat in the first leg of the second preliminary round against Al Ahly, the Kenyan Premier League champions now face an uphill task to overturn the result when they head to Cairo for the second leg this Saturday.
Neiva, who previously referred to Al Ahly as the “Real Madrid of Africa,” is fully aware of the magnitude of the mission ahead. His team needs nothing short of a 4-0 victory against one of the most successful clubs in African football if they are to progress to the next round. Acknowledging the challenge, Neiva said, “It’s a difficult situation, but in football, anything is possible. We go to Cairo with hope and determination to give it our all.”
Preparation and Strategy
In the days leading up to the crucial second leg, Gor Mahia has been training intensively at the Mpesa Foundation in Thika. Neiva has been working tirelessly to refine his team’s tactics, focusing on tightening the defense and ensuring they capitalize on scoring opportunities.
The Brazilian coach is expected to field his strongest possible lineup, hoping to strike a balance between defensive solidity and attacking threat. Alhonce Omija is likely to partner with Sylvester Owino in central defense, while Geoffrey Ochieng and Rooney Onyango will take up the full-back roles. The midfield will see Ghanaian playmaker Enock Morrison and Alpha Onyango tasked with controlling the tempo and providing the creative spark needed to break down the Al Ahly defense.
Reflecting on the mistakes from the first leg, Neiva stressed the importance of avoiding defensive lapses that cost them dearly. In that match, Al Ahly took control early with Ramy Rabia scoring in the 14th minute after capitalizing on a rebound from Gor Mahia goalkeeper Kevin Omondi. Just a minute later, a defensive error allowed Parcy Tau to double Al Ahly’s lead, silencing the home crowd at Nyayo Stadium. Tau would later complete his brace in the 75th minute to seal a commanding 3-0 win for the Egyptian side.
“We made mistakes that we simply cannot afford in a match of this level,” Neiva said. “Conceding two goals in two minutes was a huge blow, and we need to ensure that doesn’t happen again in Cairo. Defensively, we have to be sharper and more organized.”

Learning from the First Leg
Despite the heavy defeat, Neiva drew positives from his team’s efforts, particularly in the way they competed against Al Ahly’s superior squad. The Brazilian tactician emphasized that Gor Mahia’s objective in the second leg is not just to overturn the deficit but also to restore pride and show their mettle against one of Africa’s best teams.
“Al Ahly are on a different level, but we proved we can compete. What matters now is how we respond. It’s about giving a good account of ourselves and representing Gor Mahia with pride. We need to make sure we take our chances and stay focused for the full 90 minutes.”
Al Ahly’s Perspective
Al Ahly, coached by Swiss tactician Marcel Koller, are the reigning African champions and are aiming for their third consecutive CAF Champions League title. Koller praised Gor Mahia’s effort in the first leg and acknowledged that the tie is far from over, despite his team’s commanding lead.
“Gor Mahia showed that they are capable of playing at this level, and we expect them to fight hard in the second leg,” Koller said. “This tie is not over yet, and we need to stay focused. We have 90 minutes left, and anything can happen in football.”
Koller’s side will be playing in front of their home crowd at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo, where they are notoriously difficult to beat. However, Gor Mahia will be hoping to take inspiration from past underdog victories in football and pull off an unlikely miracle.
The Road Ahead for Gor Mahia
While overturning a 3-0 deficit against a team of Al Ahly’s caliber is undoubtedly a tall order, Gor Mahia remain determined to put up a fight. However, their task has been made even more challenging by recent changes to the CAF rules. Unlike previous editions, where teams eliminated in the Champions League’s preliminary stages dropped into the CAF Confederations Cup, this year’s competition will see those teams exit entirely, meaning Gor Mahia have no second chance.
The second leg of the Champions League tie between Gor Mahia and Al Ahly will take place on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo. For Gor Mahia, it’s a game that represents not just a chance at redemption but also an opportunity to show they belong on Africa’s biggest stage, even if the odds are stacked heavily against them.
