Posta Rangers Part Ways with Head Coach Bernard Kawinzi: What’s Next for the FKFPL Side?

Posta Rangers, a Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) team, has officially announced that head coach Bernard Kawinzi will depart from the club as his contract expires at the end of January. This decision comes after a season plagued by poor performance, with the club sitting at the bottom of the league table. Collins “Korea” Omondi, previously Kawinzi’s assistant, has been appointed as interim head coach while the club searches for a permanent replacement.

Kawinzi’s Exit and Interim Replacement

Bernard Kawinzi took charge of Posta Rangers in April 2024, replacing John Kamau, who was placed on compulsory leave due to poor results. However, Kawinzi’s tenure failed to yield the turnaround the club desperately needed. With only 11 points from 14 matches this season, the team finds itself in a precarious position, battling relegation in the FKFPL.

John Tonui, the Postmaster General of the Postal Corporation of Kenya—Posta Rangers’ sponsor—confirmed the club’s decision not to renew Kawinzi’s contract.

“I have been informed that his contract expires at the end of January, and the team management has decided not to renew it,” Tonui stated.

Collins ‘Korea’ Omondi appointed Posta Rangers interim head coach

In the interim, Collins “Korea” Omondi will step up as acting head coach. Omondi, who has significant coaching experience, has been part of Posta Rangers’ technical team and previously served as the team’s caretaker manager in 2022.

Challenges for Korea as Interim Coach

This is the second time Collins Omondi has been elevated to the head coach position on a temporary basis. In 2022, he filled a similar role following the departure of Salim Ali. Omondi brings a wealth of experience from stints with National Super League (NSL) sides Naivas and the now-defunct Nairobi Stima, as well as a role as assistant coach at Mathare United.

Despite his credentials, Omondi faces an uphill task. Posta Rangers are currently languishing at the bottom of the FKFPL standings, having won just two of their 14 league matches this season. The team has accumulated only 11 points, putting their top-flight status at serious risk.

Korea’s immediate priority will be to stabilize the team and improve results. The players’ morale will need a significant boost, and tactical adjustments are likely required to shore up the team’s defense and enhance their attack.

A Club in Decline: What Went Wrong?

Posta Rangers’ struggles are a stark contrast to their history. Promoted to the FKFPL in 2016, the club has consistently managed to stay in the top flight, avoiding relegation despite occasional challenges. However, the current season has been a nightmare, with poor performances highlighting systemic issues both on and off the pitch.

Key problems include:

  • Defensive Frailties: The team has struggled to keep clean sheets, conceding crucial goals in matches they could have salvaged.
  • Lack of Attacking Firepower: With only two wins all season, Posta Rangers’ inability to convert chances into goals has been a recurring problem.
  • Coaching Instability: Frequent changes in coaching staff have disrupted continuity and affected player development.

The Search for a Permanent Coach

The club has already begun the search for a senior coach to take over on a permanent basis. According to Tonui, the goal is to find a tactician capable of turning the team’s fortunes around.

“We are currently in the market for a senior coach to take over and turn things around for the club,” Tonui confirmed.

The next appointment will be crucial, as the incoming coach will need to implement immediate changes to rescue Posta Rangers from relegation while also building a long-term strategy for sustained success.

Lessons from Former Coaches

Posta Rangers’ history with previous coaches highlights the potential impact of leadership changes. John Kamau, who was replaced by Kawinzi in 2024, has found success at Mathare United, where he has enjoyed a dream start to the current season. This suggests that systemic issues within Posta Rangers, rather than individual coaching abilities, may be contributing to their struggles.

A permanent coach with a clear vision and the ability to address these systemic problems could be the key to revitalizing the club.

The Road Ahead for Posta Rangers

With the FKFPL season nearing its midpoint, time is running out for Posta Rangers to salvage their campaign. Korea’s immediate goal as interim coach will be to secure crucial points in the next few matches. Avoiding relegation will require:

  • Defensive Stability: Shoring up the backline to avoid conceding soft goals.
  • Offensive Improvement: Increasing goal-scoring opportunities through tactical changes and improved finishing.
  • Team Morale: Motivating players to perform at their best despite the challenges.

For fans, the hope lies in the club’s ability to adapt quickly and bring in a coach who can implement a turnaround. Posta Rangers have a history of resilience, and their survival in the FKFPL will depend on how effectively they respond to this crisis.
