President William Ruto conducted an inspection tour of the Talanta Sports Stadium on Tuesday, July 30, providing updates on the project that marks a significant milestone in Kenya’s sports infrastructure. This stadium will be the first international-standard facility constructed by the Kenyan government since the Kasarani Stadium in 1987, built for the All Africa Games.
The Talanta Sports Stadium project began after Kenya, alongside Uganda and Tanzania, secured the hosting rights for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) under the Pamoja Bid. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in March, with construction scheduled to occur between March 2024 and December 2025.
During his visit, President Ruto assessed the progress and confirmed that the stadium would be completed by the end of 2025. He emphasized the importance of the project in creating job opportunities and boosting the local economy as the construction advances.
“I have come here today to inspect the progress of the construction works of this stadium. We will employ more people to ensure the work is completed before the end of next year,” Ruto announced.
President Ruto also highlighted the significance of the stadium in enhancing Kenya’s sporting profile and providing a substantial infrastructural upgrade for Nairobi and the nation. He reiterated the government’s commitment to developing a comprehensive sports and creative industry infrastructure master plan.
In addition to the Talanta Sports Stadium, the President mentioned ongoing initiatives to upgrade various sports facilities across the country. These improvements aim to provide quality training environments for athletes and support the development of sporting talent nationwide.
Earlier in the day, President Ruto visited Lenana School Primary, where additional classrooms are being built to accommodate the growing number of learners. This visit aligns with the government’s broader efforts to improve educational infrastructure across the country.
The construction of the Talanta Sports Stadium is being handled by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), with oversight provided by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF). While the cost of the 60,000-capacity stadium remains undisclosed, it is being financed through a Public-Private Partnership.
President Ruto expressed confidence that the Talanta Sports Stadium would become an iconic facility for Kenya, offering state-of-the-art amenities and fostering a vibrant sports culture.
